Vintge Zildjian Ink Stamp?

Hello,

When did Zildjian start ink stamping the make/model on the top of cymbals?

I am in the market for a 60's 18" ride and have been following the Ebay auctions. The link is for an auction that has ended. It claims the engraved stamp is from the 60's but has an ink stamp "crash ride".

I thought the ink stamps originated in the late 70's or 80's.

I don't see any ink stamps in the Zildjian cataloges till the 80's.

Thanks.

I don´t know exact, but I have at least seen Z cymbals from the 50´s with the ink still going strong.

Ludwig 26" ´75 Green Sparkle
Ludwig Big Beat ´71 Citrus Mod
Sonor Hilite Exclusive Black -90
Yamaha 9000 Sunset Brown ´84
Yamaha 8000 Cobolt Blue ´90
20 different Ludwig B/O snares
Blue Label 602´s, EAK´s and a bunch of vintage A´s.

thanks Ringo. I have never seen a "vintage" Zildjian with any black ink before. I know the hollow logo on the bottom in the 70's but I thought all the "medium" "thin" "new beat" stamps started in the 80's.

Who Knew?

Actually, yeah...the model types were ink stamped way back before the '50's...just solid black, block letters and such.

I have a mid 40's transition-stamp 22" ride cymbal which still faintly reads "Be-Bop Ride" in block letters.

I too have one marked "Bop Ride" in solid block letters from the early fifties that still quite legible. This one is not a trans stampl.

Since most of the old Zildjians I've seen do not have any block lettering or ink stamp on top or bottom, was there a model that did not get ink stamped or is it that the stamps have worn off or been removed?

I've posted a picture (from EBay) of the typical vintage Zildjian cymbal without markings.

Thanks for the info.

I believe the ink stamp that started in the 70's was the Zildjian logo ink stamp. The first would have been the hollow logo Zildjian ink stamp on the bottom of the cymbal. In the 80's it appeared as a solid logo on top and bottom.

can anyone concur?

I own a pair of hollow logo hihats that have a "new beat top" and "new beat bottom" stamped on them as well.

Yes, that's true..regarding A's....70's to early 80's was the hollow "Zildjian" logo, then it switched to solid. But prior to that, they were ink stamped only regarding series/model types.

I really dunno if EVERY old Zildjian originally had the model/series ink stamp though....
