Chris Slade or Phil Rudd

Loading...

No discredit to Simon Wright. But who do you enjoy more as the drummer for AC/DC. I know Phil is the classic drummer, and Slade only performed on one studio record. But since he is the drummer again I feel this question has some merit. I think Slade is more well rounded as a player, and uses a lot more dynamic and nuance with his playing. And when I was a kid and saw the video for Thunderstruck I always loved the way his drum set looked. Big tom in front, massive floor tom and two bass drums behind. Maybe I'm a bit biased because I do enjoy the work of Tom Jones and was always a fan of The Firm. But I think he adds something else to the songs, a range that Phil Rudd didn't bring.

Interesting topic. Rudd has a better feel to me by far.

Similarly in many ways, another drummer who has a lot of feel and probably doesn't get enough credit is Steven Adler. I read somewhere that Izzy Stradlin thought that GNR's songs didn't sound the same without Adler; and that was one of the reasons he left the band.

I can't disrespect a drummer who is selected by Jimmy Page. But for me, Phil Rudd is AC/DC. Boom-thwack is what the music requires, and Phil is the master of that.

It's not as simple as it looks.

I do enjoy Steven Adler's playing a lot, but I would say I enjoy Matt Sorum's playing just as much, but with different regard. Would have been interesting to hear him on the Use Your Illusion records if he had the capacity to actually play at that point. But sadly he was far too in depth with his substances. I actually also have a rare copy of certain use you illusion songs with Steven playing on them. They were recorded sometime in the later 80's in the studio. Not very good, not at all.

I know that simplistic playing is very complex. The thing I like about Chris is that he does keep it simple, but his use of dynamics on the simple is outstanding. A song such as Thunderstruck ( happens to be a good example ) it sounds as though Chris is going between using the tip of the stick on the top of the hi-hat and the shaft on the edge. Maybe I've never fully listened, but I've never heard Phil play little things such as that.

I prefer the bluntness of the AC/DC in the Bon Scott era, and Rudd's style is an integral part of that.

Yeah, I've read the same. Apparently that's why he got the boot- because he couldn't record the next album. Why is it that drummers have to foul up a good band (ie Bonham, Moon, Rudd, Adler, etc)?

Sorry to hi-jack your thread with my ADD. Here's Adler's last show:

But back to Rudd- I think he'll be back with AC-DC when (or if) they tour again, assuming he hasn't tried to kill somebody.

They are actually touring right now. Chris Slade is officially their drummer again. That's what brought this up for me.

Right, I meant after this tour. It was reported that the judge wouldn't release Rudd from home detention to go on tour.

Gotcha. Yea who knows. But I'm gonna try and catch them with Chris behind the drums. Never thought I'd get a chance.

A friend of mine worked with AC/DC (closely with Brian Johnson) on their world tour around 2010. A few years ago I was on business in London and arranged to meet up with him for a beer which we did. Well low and behold in walks Brian Johnson his Mrs and his mother-in-law. My jaw dropped, but obviously as he was in London (doing some promo) he was catching up with this friend as well. One of those "bloody hell" moments.

Anyway what a lovely lovely bloke. Stories for hours. So funny. BUT as I am a drummer it soon got onto the subject of the history and crazy antics of the AC/DC drummers. And there were some big stories there! One thing he said beyond all, despite the incredible talent that has gone through that band over the years for him Rudd has always made the music feel right. For Johnson there is no other drummer that comes close to creating the right touch for that band other than Rudd.

That is a night I will never forget.

So Rudd for Johnson.

And Rudd for me.

I must add I did watch them at Coachella earlier this year and Slade and the band were brilliant.
