Keith Moon's Cymbals

From GiantBeater

Thanks for posting and although I am aware of the site and love it... it lacks much cymbal information unfortunately... other than what has been sold at auction.

Thing is those guys probably went through more gear than they had time to keep a record of! There's a part in The Kids Are Alright where Townshend tallies up how much they spent on gear in a short period of time and it was mind blowing! Also, back then the cymbals companies didn't stamp like they do now which makes it hard to determine from pics what he used.

He had high hats for his little ludwig kit in the beginning. He got his red sparkle premier kit and used it very briefly as a single bass kit. Almost immediately it turned into a double bass kit and a high hat was never seen again live until his monster white and gold kit. And realistically, he probably used anything and everything.

I've a Paiste booklet that lists him having played 'black label" 2002's!,

A mate of mine here in Melbourne Australia actually had a Premier concert tom kit EXACT&PRECISE color series&sizes as "the loon's" ! took him ages/for ever to sell it!.

I really liked Kieth Moon when I was a kid but I had no money so I never liked to see drums or cymbals destroyed like that. I saw the Who in Philadelphia in 1975 and they were great but again, they wrecked everything and then, Kieth wrecked himself. What a waste of a great talent that could have still been relevant today.

In summer 1968 I helped unpack Moon's POL set at The Kinetic Playground in Chicago.

Moonie was using a 20" A Zildjian where the high hats would be, an 18" Paiste between the two bass drums and an 18" A Zildjian hanging halfway over the second rack tom on Moon's right side bass drum.

He rarely reached out to hit the Paiste, mostly he rode back and forth between the two Zildjains.

It sounded so good.......

He was using short little Rogers Louie Bellson sticks. I got one!

That must have been so cool to be a part of. Great memory of drum history! Didn't Premier make a POL replica kit they sold at one time? Would be cool to have. And BTW congrats to your RRHOF induction!

Glenn.
