Gretsch Orphan 60's Progressive Jazz Green Sparkle

Loading...

This kit was a back burner project from a spare kick drum shell I had lying around, and since I completed it it has become my main gigging kit. It sounds wonderful.

The 14x14 floor tom was a shell that I snagged for very cheap off eBay because someone had converted it into a snare! Barf!

Here is an album with more details of how I restored these drums and put the kit together: http://imgur.com/a/4UCVm

I also made a faux/repro 4x14 matching snare from a Keller shell and a mix of modern and vintage Gretsch parts that I had laying around. No photos of that yet, I'll post at a later date...

Nice work and nice drums... now finish it off with a nice period correct Gretsch bass drum head.

I've thought about getting one, but ultimately I don't like the way single ply bass drum heads sound. The front head is an Aquarian Regulator. I really wish they made these in white, glossy or coated. If so, I'd just buy a Gretsch logo sticker to complete the look.

If I can one day find a 20" Gretsch calf head from the 60's with a good hole cut in it for a decent price, I'll try that. Otherwise I'm after sound, not looks with the heads.

Dang that's a great color on that kit! It looks very lively. How does it do under the lights?

And I too love the Super Kick/Regulator combo and wish they had a coated white Regulator. Really don't like the extra large logo they have gone with now either.

Nice job!

Yeah, you can see I took off the front head's logo with some Goof-Off. I don't want newbs thinking I play an Aquarian drum set.

The green sparkle is way brighter in person actually, it always came out darker through a camera lens for some reason.

About painting a head (a drumhead I mean), I've had very good results with a high quality oil-paint. Good oil paint has a very high grade of pigments, so you won't have to use a thick layer (affecting the sound too much). You have to thin the paint with white spirit. Apply with a brush and than use a sponge and tab it, to make a nice even looking coat.

Take titanium-white, NOT zinc-white. You could use a tip of brown to mix it a little creamy.

These bass heads are all done like that:
