One last thing - fast-drying! Seriously or the hoops could be tacky for like a week...bah! It's 2015 - paint gets 25 minutes to dry or forget it! :)

I think I might try the black sharpy first. Thanks for the great responses to my question.

After the first application, you can let it dry a bit and give it a second coat if needed.

From jaghog

Actually the satin all surface enamel from sw is a closer match the sheen us just right

I am sure that Ludwig, Slingerland and Gretsch used a semi gloss/satin finish on their hoops.. Do a good job & spray can the hoops, an hour or so will be all you need...

Cheers

You won't want to spray the whole hoop if it just needs touch-ups. If you are not satisfied with the Sharpie method [too dark/flat maybe], you can still use spray paint by shooting some into the cap and using a brush. Just hold cap and can away from you, outdoors - there's a ton of blowback...oh yeah a plastic glove might be in order. :)

But you definitely want to keep as much original paint on there as possible - nothing is quite like it, as it was applied 40 years ago...
