1940 28" Ludwig Blue & Silver Bass Drum

There is a hole drilled above the badge. It looks factory. Lines up perfect in every sense. Do you know what went there? Small cymbal holder?

Probably for a lamp/cord......they used to use a light bulb inside the drum to a) show off the artwork on the front head. and b) keep the heads in better tune from the heat from the bulb.....calfskin heads are notorious to be affected by changes in temperature and humidity being natural animal skin. The bulb was a way of creating a semi-controlled environment.

...and with the advent of mylar heads, things changed. I had the same hole in the bass and used it to wire a microwave in mine. Great to have a nice hot hoagy during those schmaltzy love ballads. Ya gotta love progress!:)
