Yes, I have this same problem. I was blaming it on lazy footwork on my part, but maybe it is a Speed King issue. Anxious to hear if anyone has any other answers (return spring tension or something).

Loosen the two screws on the bottom of the goal post. take out the piston and springs, and check if any of those two items are broken or bent.

As crazy as it may sound, move the position of the beater to where it is hitting the batter head. Try it a little higher up. I've had two drums in which I had some Speed King problems and this was the fix.

anyway, I tried moving the beater up and it did not solve the problem. However when I took the beater out completely I noticed that the rod was bent!. I have a new beater in one of the drawers so I am going to put that on tonight & I will let you know the outcome

It probably got bent from you resting your foot on it more than the strain of the hit. Been there done that.....

I keep it loose in the hardware case so it may have been bent between stands plus its over 50 years old

You might check the bottom plate that connects the heel of the foot board to the bottom of the post assembly. I had a similar proble, recently and determined that this bottom plate was bent and therefore didn't sit flat on the floor causing a similar problem. Good luck!

It's called bass drum chatter and it isn't just Speed Kings. If any pedal isn't properly set-up and adjusted, it will 'chatter' against the head. Mike gave you the fix! Also check the angle at which the beater is striking the head. It should be only slightly forward of parallel to the drum head when the beater is held against the head.
