Trixon .....

I recall my very first gig in a band as pupils back in the early 70s...

It was like this set, but in yellowish, and the drumset from the other

band's drummer playing that evening. I found it absolutely curious ...

shells with different diameters of top and bottom.

Still a very strange, unique set! Cool1

WOW! Now, if THAT'S not the coolest kit I have seen in QUITE awhile, then I dont know what is!

What exactly did you have to do to restore it? Man! It looks like a brand new set right off the showroom floor except for the Air Ride floor tom tips!

I wish I had a kit like that!Mister T

When I picked up the kit, only the snare and kick had rims and tension rods (the metal rims are pretty rusty), the floor tom is cracked at one leg, and it was dirty. Took it all apart and cleaned up best I could, I replaced most of the metal rims with 2.0mm triple flanged, and had to switch out the swivel nuts to accept standard tension rods, and had to replace two of the floor tom leg brackets (Trixon replacement parts are hard to find). There's a bit of pitting on some of the lugs.

There is a bit of fade on the wrap - fortunately most is on the side opposite the badges! You can see in some spots that it was caused by light as it is "shadowed". The floor tom and kick also have some splotching which is typical for their glitter wraps.

I just finally got the snare all together. The parallel strainer is all about Rube Goldberg, so the snare wire brackets were hard to find (thanks again to Ingo at the Trixon site). Getting the snareside head on was a chore - it's tight to begin with, and as the shell flares outward, it just gets tighter. So, I had to sand the inside of the counterhoop a bit. Also, I couldn't use a new rim as the tension rods started binding up once I got them all in - the holes need to be further away from the shell to line up with the lugs.

The bearing edges are in good shape - full roundover, so the sound is punchy and focused. No complaints about the sound so far.

It's nice to gig with, as the cymbal mount, tom mount, kick spurs, and floor tom legs all telescope inside the drums.

This kit is almost the same as the very first "real" kit that I sat behind and took lessons on back in '67. That kit was a VOX, who had the U.S. distributorship at the time (there are some minor cosmetic differences). I always had an eye out for these, and I was really excited when I won them, but when I picked them up, I was kind of let down by the shape they were in. The pictures in the Ebay ad had looked a lot better, but they cleaned up a lot nicer than I expected.

Wow! Excellent job! Just fantastic! I really love those kits. I am wary of the plastic lugs, though. But design-wise and STYLE-wise, I think they are the coolest of them all!

Thanks for sharing that restoration! Burger KinBurger Kin

Those are metal lugs - the gray gaskets are plastic. They stayed in pretty good shape. However, probably due to that tight-fitting snareside head, some of those lug posts are bent and I'm surprised they stayed together when I put it back together. I'm keeping an eye out for replacements.

Thanks for the kind words ... if there was one kit that was a "grail" of sorts for me, this is it. I really lucked out with this, as those Trixon kits aren't easy to find in decent shape. And despite all that I heard about how crappy they were supposed to sound, this kit must be the exception.
