Tower, every day of the week. Unless of course it is a Luxor and its available, and its cheap, and I want it.

I love my 8-lug Tower snare drum! Turned it into a Powertone by installing a Swivomatic strainer and matching butt. (NO EXTRA HOLES were drilled!) My Tower came with a tone control. The only other difference is that the Tower uses a flat gray interior, while the Powertone is Gloss Gray.

Another nice snare built by good old "F" (Frank)! You could call it a "Powertower" or "Towertone".

I've thought about adding a Swivomatic strainer and matching butt to one of my Luxor snares for a "Power-lux" or "Luxortone"

Nothing wrong with a Luxor (I have two). As I've mentioned in another thread, I think they are very open sounding and loud. The tuning range is not as wide as an 8 lug snare, but you need to find that sweet upper tension limit. Head and snare wire choice is key. Thinner heads and smaller strand wires seem to be the consensus for the Luxor. I have a Remo Coated Controlled Sound, Ambassador Snare and Puresound Custom Pro 20 wires. Tuning is probably on the high side and I'm probably pushing the limits of the 6 lug hoops, but it sounds so sweet.

Comparing the 6 lug Luxor to the Ludwig Pioneer and there is no contest. Ludwig wins easily. I was disappointed with my Luxor overall. But maybe I didn't play enough with the tuning.

Interesting. I was not aware of that. Flat vs. Gloss. Why do you suppose that is?
