Resource list for young/new drum students.

Hello All,

To my great joy my 8 year old nephew is taking up the drums. Yea!

Set him up with Remo practice pad, sticks and the updated Ludwig book. Sending him a Ludwig LM-404 Black Galaxy snare.

He may be the youngest member of VDF and will be following this thread. Have a core teacher and two others lined up. They are all friends so he will receive varied but not conflicting instruction.

For YouTube vids of the masters to watch have started this list. Thanks Glenn for your help. BR, Gene Krupa, Ed Shaughnessy, Louie Bellson, Chick Webb, Big Sid Catlett, Papa Joe.

Please add anything you have found to be helpful.

Thanks!

Creighton

Creighton - If you're not getting much action here (which surprises me because it's for an 8 year-old kid,) I'll add some stuff from some of the many drummers that influenced me. I hope he watches the videos and gets the itch to learn like we all did.

The first guy I want him to hear is Joe Morello. Joe was my drum hero when I was 12 and learning.

Next up to bat, Gene Krupa.

[ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9J5Zt2Obko"]Gene Krupa- Sing, Sing, Sing - YouTube[/ame]

The King, Buddy Rich.

And one of my all-time favorites, Papa Jo Jones.

If listening to these guys doesn't give him the bug, nothing will!

Enjoy...

Hey Creighton glad to hear this young man has the drums as a new interest. Sounds like he has a great start and a very cool Uncle helping him along~! John posted some very good vids to watch, listen and learn from. And hello Thomas!! This is a great place to learn about anything and everything drum related. :)

What a very Cool and Proud Uncle!

The videos John uploaded inspire me. They are great to watch again!

I look forward to reading your nephews questions just like we asked when we first started our drum lessons.

Good Luck Thomas!

So sorry I am late viewing/adding to this thread.

Here is one I just found. Been getting no where close to be able play it for years. Edgar Winter Group "Frankenstein" 1973. For the younger members the 70's were very strange.

This Ram Jam "Black Betty" vid. Always gives me a smile. These cats are having a good time. The Kool-Aid may have been spiked however :-)

This Buddy is killer. Regret if repost. Won't harm anyone to watch it again :-)

Film at that time ran at 120 frames per second. Interesting how it appears as 4 sticks at times.

Gold star for the first to identify what Buddy standard is missing in this clip.

Start him on the right path: Steve Jordan's DVD The Groove Is Here.

A couple of excerpts I found on the tube:
