Gretsch project

Loading...

I got this shell today, Im going to refinish it to match my drum instructors kit. I have some questions and hope a Gretsch expert will chime in for us.

Questions,

Pic 1, did Gretsch have shells with vertical grain" The tag looks legit and I dont think it was moved from another drum.

Pic 2 , the drum had a Ludwig mount on it when I got it but there are holes and a shadow indicating a diamond shaped mounting plate.

Pic 3, looks like this shell once had two tone controls?

The drum did have Gretsch lugs on it and the drill job looks factory.

There is no hole for a vent or sign of a badge.

The edges are weird, almost squre on the inside but a round over on the outside. Its hard to count the plys because there is so much crud on them. But its a thin shell and measures 3/16".

Thank you!

Here are a couple pics of one with two tone control's so that mystery may be solved. The other pic is of the mount that he wants on this shell.

Two tone controls is normal for Gretsch. Also, it looks old enough to me to have the diamond plate, there were at least two versions of the diamond plate, one have visible screws and the other did not. The oldest one will have visible mount fasteners.

Clear heads weren`t around so the finish spilling into the shell is like Ludwig,...lazy.

Is it veneer inside or sheet.

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

Thanks odball! That messy stuff inside the shell is adhesive. I think someone put a wrap on it at one time and made that mess.

Veneer inside or sheet, I don't understand what yo mean by sheet.

Thank you!

So what about the vent hole? Were the older ones like Slinerland and had no hole for a while?

Looks like I will need a badge, tom mount and two tone controls.

Another thing to point out, the shells has five lugs each side.

Jeff yes the three ply shells and the 6 ply shells up until the late 60's had the tacked on badges no vent holes in the toms.

This appears to be six ply.

I did find one small nail or tac, poking through the shell. We're those badges held by one tack?

Thank you!
