It depends on what year your 60's era are? But the sparkle colored wraps are basically the same as the 60's, the tangerine sparkle is a real looker also.

They have thousands of colors to choose from that are not listed on their site. If you are close enough to drive I would suggest taking the ride and looking through the color swatches. None of the modern stuff is going to be an accurate match. I restored a Rogers kit for one oof my customers and had to match a silver sparkle wrap on a floor tom for a 1962 kit. The modern stuff wasn't close at all but I was able to find a custom color that wasvery close. Close enough that at a drum show, of the 2 dozen people that were interested in the kit only two of them correctly identified the floor tom as the re-wrap.

I'm not trying to match anything here, it will all be new wrap. Any year of the 60's will do, it's an orphan kit anyway. I just want to get wrap that was a color Gretsch actually offered back then.

Precision doesn't advertise a tangerine or an orange sparkle, only "super tangerine glitter." Are glitter wraps what was used, or are the sparkle wraps more authentically vintage?

Glitter (shards of crushed glass) was used, but most came with glitter (flecks of metal). Glitter is thick and harder to apply. Plus, the heads will be tight. I did a kit in glitter, but used the tape method, had to do some trimming and the heads are still snug.

Call Precision Drum and ask for some samples. They'll send them for free. I would say the standard sparkle colors will look just like the stuff used in the 60's, but shinier. A lot of the original 60's wraps have "orange peeled". Especially, the glass glitter used on Rogers kits.

Gloss black is the same material they all used for black. Gretsch called in Nitron. Dead on match.

Oh, and most black kits had silver sparkle inlays. The glass glitter is probably the closest.

And to me, solid colors indicate either 70's kits or cheapo 90's Chinese kits. Just like that dark burgundy wrap that every junky import used for a decade, everybody knows the one.

The only solid wrap I ever cared for was yellow. Or some of the turquoise ones Tama used in the 80's are cool too. But for this project I gotta go with something that says, "60's."

Then you need to look at Burgundy, Champagne or Gold Sparkle (in that order). In my opinion, that's 60's Gretsch. If not a sparkle, then White Pearl.

If you go to the Drum Guide and click on Gretsch, there is an option to look at Finishes.....the 60s finishes page from the catalogs are there... :)
