I got a Slingerland Kit - Let me in the club!

I would sell the pictured Pearl mount if you are interested. No idea what these are worth. Case of bong fog what I paid. It is pretty much mint. Just missing a few washers. I've pondered tossing it in the ocean so no other drums are harmed :-)

Wow guys, what a great community! The internet can be a cold, dark place. I am happy to find this gem of a site. Thank you for the warm welcome.

I think I'll keep the finish the way it is, I really love the wood look, but just in case I change my mind: How does wrapping affect the sound? I'm digging the sound of these drums right now, wouldn't want to hurt anything. And is wrapping something I should try on my own?

Here are some more detailed looks at the port hole and mount holes in the tom tom. What's that red stuff?

Grabbing Creighton's mount looks like a good option. Seems like the harm has been done, might as well embrace it. I could attach the tom and use the other arm for a cowbell or something like that.

Another Question: what kind of snare should i be looking for to 'match' this kit? The guy I purchased this from gave me a pearl brass piccolo snare, it actually sounds pretty cool, but I feel like this kit needs a wood snare. I've been perusing local kijiji/craigslist ads for a slingerland wood snare, they are not a popular item. I'd be worried about buying something from ebay...seems to me it is important to acutally hear the drum you are buying. Any recommendations? I live in Hamilton, Ontario if that makes a difference.

Thank you all!

the wrap will dampen the sound slightly. This set was originality wrapped anyway, What red stuff are you referring to?

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

The red stuff around the holes?

Looks like red silicone for some kind of a seal?

From jerrysterken

I suggest putting a Pearl mount back on. It'll look fine. Only other vintage drummers will know the difference.

Yes agreed... Even if you are not hanging the toms... and presumably the tom has holes for the pearl mount as well? .. If you are not hanging the tom I would cut gaskets of ply or rubber to put (concealed within the mounts) to close off the holes...

Cheers

Just so you know the Pearl mount weighs 6 lbs. Impressive piece of engineering but heavy.

Welcome to Slinger-Land! :D

Play them as they are. I would have a thin 1/8th inch Mahogany rectangle shaped and made to cover the holes on top, use the existing corner holes to secure it with small screws and bolts and then I'd play those drums just as they are. Sweet set of tubs. Enjoy them!

Too many great drums to list here!

Welcome. Nice kit. Slingerland drums are great but don't get a ton of respect in some quarters. Pay no attention as a lot of killer recordings were done using Slingerland drums. I have quite a few of them myself.

I really like the idea of fabricating a custom wood plate. That could look quite nice.

Otherwise, here are your options as I see it:

1- Leave them alone and play them.

2- Add a Pearl double mount

3- fill the holes and re-wrap. It would really take shell plugs to fill the 7/8" holes and possibly dowel rods for the smaller ones. Then sand and finish. Not a job for the novice but there are plenty of threads on this site depicting how to do that. Wrapping is another job that, while not at all impossible, takes a bit of experience.

4- There are metal plate covers available that will do exactly what the wood plate will do that you can purchase, install and be done. Here is an option: http://www.fullcompass.com/product/419679.html?utm_source=googleps&utm_medium=shopping&utm_campaign=googleps&gclid=CKKhlZSaysUCFdgUgQodzGwA5g

Kind of a let down to have a Pearl logo on it though. Check JP2 creations as well. I know Jim has plates for Rogers and Ludwig.

Enjoy!!!!

Excellent idea.

Would work for the tom tom as well.

I wouldn't use a Pearl mount. With the tom in a snare stand, there is no reason to bolt 6 pounds of chrome with a "Pearl" logo to the top of the bass drum except to cover the holes, and it's almost as easy to put a plate over them.

I recently found this set at my grandparents house and believe it is pretty old. I am not really sure what to look for on it and would like to sell it. Can anyone tell me anything about it or where to find information? I would really appreciate it! A local music shop has made me an offer, but I feel like they are trying to rip me off. Thanks!!
