Vintage Premier Percussion Kit

Loading...

Looking for info on a drum kit that I purchased, any help would be appreciated.

Premier Percussion 5 piece kit with natural wood finish, stain is a honey gold in color. The lugs on all of the drums are the long elegant one piece style and the drums are longer than the standard length of most drums (longer than my 1979 Gretsch kit). Sizes are: 20 x 16 kick, 10 x 9 tom, 12 x 10 tom, 14 x 11 tom with a 14 x 5 chrome steel snare. Premier finished the inside of the kick and toms with a flat black paint. I believe the drums were made with birch, because the drums are so heavy. All of the badges say Made in England below the Premier Percussion.

Very nice sounding drum kit with Remo Ambassador coated batter heads on the toms, the snare has a Premier coated batter with a clear resonant head. The kick's legs swing down and are quite heavy duty. I also got the original heavy duty snare stand and hi-hat with them. This appears to be a top of the line drum kit and has been sitting stored (properly) for many years. There are some scratches on the toms and kick, but otherwise the kit is in good condition, with perfect bearing edges. Here's my questions:

- can somebody tell me what the actual color of these drums was called?

- all three toms have rack holders, and there is no floor tom, is that the way Premier sold some of their kits back then? If so was there a separate tom stand for the 14 inch tom?

- any idea of what the value of the kit might be currently?

- can someone confirm the era of this kit, by my description?

- was there an option to order deeper drums like these or were all Premier toms and kicks longer that average, or was that a certain trademark of an era?

- does anyone have the dual floor tom stand and mount for this kit and maybe the 13 inch tom with a rack mount.

Thanks,

Barry

I looked on Premier`s website and determined that Premier Percussion started in 1984 thru 1988. Then Yamaha bought them out. My guess was that this kit was 1984 to 1988. What would make you believe them to be newer... and yes I`m working on some pics..hopefully I can post them without having to re-size them....

The kit should have had a FT, if you have 3 on racks, so you're missing at least one FT.

It's highly unlikely that you will be able to order from Premier any fill-in or missing parts/pieces. Premier never stock piled parts, when it's gone, it's gone. The long lugs you describe were known as "speed boat" lugs.

This isn't the same kit but this is how it would have been set up.

It sure looks like that was the set-up. Although as you mentioned, my kit has the speed boat lugs. Any idea of the era...am I correct in assuming that these drums were made between 1984 and 1988... as well I understand that the birch kits were much heavier than the mahogany ones, because they had more plys. This is a very heavy kit. Do you know when Premier went to the speed boat lugs, and this style of kit with the two mounted floor toms.

I bought a premier bass and tom brand new in 1994 - they had the one-piece lugs fitted, so they were making these pretty late. I think soon after this they went to the really small ones they started to use. Thing is, I don't think they used that kind of wood in the 90's. as for when the one-piece lugs came in I'm not sure, but the kit I bought the aforemtioned drums to add to was an APK, and that had one-piece lugs (the pointed arrow type typical of most premier floor toms). I'd guess that they used both types at the same time on different models, until phasing out both designs for the common smaller lug.

Thanks for your feedback. Did your kit have the black painted finish on the inside as well? I'm wondering if/when Premier started doing that and if they continued it thru to the present? I realize now that the missing drum to this kit must be a 13" rack tom, which would make sense, 10", 12", 13" and 14", with a 20" bass and a 14 x 5 chrome snare. It wold be nice to find a matching 13" tom and the free standing double tom rack with holder, if someone has them.

Hi. The original kit I bought, which I bought the two extra drums for, was painted black inside, and didn't sound great to be honest, something I only discovered with hindsight as every kit I've owned since has sounded better. (This black paint came in as far as I'm aware with the mass-produced Premier kits, when they sold out and started making kits overseas) Having said that, it served me very well. Pretty sure the two I bought later were black inside too.

The black paint on my kit is perfect. I just took them apart to clean and replace some heads. They have a great sound, different from my Gretsch kit that I bought new, back in 1979. The Gretsch kit has silver paint on the inside which is still perfect as well. I'm impressed with these Premiers on a few levels, they are well made, very heavy (thankfully I'm not lugging them around to gigs), the hardware is beautiful on the drums, they look great as this kit is deep and finally they sound great. I also received the original Premier HD snare stand and hi-hat with the clutch. Not a bad score. They came with Zildian K series cymbals that the previous owner purchased, including a K/Z custom pair of 13" hi-hats, which are much crisper than my 14" Zildian New Beats that I bought with my Gretsch kit in 1979.

Buying this kit and a slightly used (still look new) 2009 Gretsch Catalina Maple Fusion kit in Cherry Red (sizes 22" base, 10" tom, 12" tom, 14' floor tom, 16" floor tom and a 6" x 14" wood snare), that I haven't received yet. This will give me some new stuff to play with.

The crazy thing about this is that 9 months ago, I was looking for 10 and 12 inch matching toms in Walnut for my old Gretsch kit, to add to the original kit that ordered in 1979. I bought a 22' bass, 13" tom, 14" tom, 16" floor tom, and a Ludwig Black Beauty Supraphonic 6.5 x 14. One fellow that I contacted about locating the smaller toms, mentioned that they might be pretty hard to find and wondered if I sell my kit. Eventually he talked me into letting him come over and check out my set. He wanted to buy my snare drum and I told him no way. His last offer was $1800 for my BB snare. I was thinking about selling it but a drum collector/appraiser said that it's worth a fair bit more than his offer. The snare retains all of it's components, with the exception of the batter head which broke 10 years ago. I still have the original cardboard boxes for my Gretsch kit and the Ludwig snare. So I started looking at buying a replacement snare, in the event that my BB sold. Now I have three drum sets. Must be out of my mind, as I haven't played professionally since 1980. :o

It sounds like a really nice kit. Obviously the black paint on yours is for resonance, and it's just a coincidence that some of the later, more inferior Premier kits had the paint, proably to disguise the basewood a bit.
