Welcome! Glad to have you. You just bought yourself an awesome set of drums. I scored one a few years ago and ended up wrapping them with KOA veneer. As far as cracks in the wrap goes Im not sure if you can do much about it. I think these Rogers big r drums had a wrap cracking issue, mine were cracked and broke all over the place, way beyond repair. If yours are not too bad I would just leave then alone, maybe try and get some adhesive of some sort into the cracks to help keep them from getting worse. As far as the strainer, you can find them on ebay or post a wanted add here and someone might have one.

Your gonna love the drums, great sounding and solid as a rock. Get them up and take some pics. Show some pics of the cracks as well.

By strainer...... Do you mean the wires? or the frame with wires? or the throw off itself?

For the wires..... Puresound Dyna-Sonic 1416 is what you want. 35-40 dollars.

For the frame and wires..... David Drew, Al Drew's Music, Woonsocket RI.

For the throw off... The proper throw off would be the Rogers "elongated" Swivomatic, the standard throw off on all Rogers Snare Drums for the Big R period. The correct one for your drum.....given it came with the XP8 set, would have a rivet top knob, same as what is on the dampener. Ebay, or one of the Rogers guys, 50-100 depending on who, where, and how screwy they are.

Thanks for the replies! Three wires have come loose from the frame, so I guess all I need is the wires. I have noticed that a couple of the drums are painted gray on the inside while the others are clear; does that seem right? I am tempted to strip off the wrap and finish the hard maple underneath. Any thoughts on this approach?

These were my late uncle's drums so I literally inherited them two days ago. As you can see from the image of all my other drums, this is my first kit, but I have been admiring them since I was 2yrs old. He also had an old Simmons SDS-7 electronic kit that I am trying to track down.

I was just fine a bass drum and floor tom myself in this same color. Th wrap on mine are a little rough also but I plan to find a tom and get these together to see how they sound then possibly rewrap. Good luck with your restore.

From my point of view this set looks very good! If there are no big cracks ,i would just give it a good polish! I would not re-wrap it!Cool1

Same here. Actually the bare shells won't look that great, the maple is pieced together with a lot of joints.

Don't rewrap it yet.

Thanks for the advice guys. I am looking for perfection I guess, really want these to be a showcase kit. For now I should just worry about restoring the Dynasonic and the high hat. A little overwhelmed with the whole project, there is a lot I want to do!

I have a Big R set in that same wrap and I left them in my car as I didn't realize it would get down in the 40's one night. The floor Tom wrap cracked down one side. So a question for Jccabinets. I saw the shape of your wrap on those Rogers your talking about. Did the wrap come off easy, or did you have to use heat? And was there much glue residue on the shell's ? Just wondering how hard it is to clean up those shells for a rewrap. I am thinking rewrapping mine one day.
