What were the types of tom mounting systems that Ludwig used in the 70s? Details and pics would be helpful.
Ludwig tom mounts in 70s
There were only two types until very late in the 70's when the Modular mounts were introduced which were thought of as a big improvement at the time but not held in much favor anymore. Before that there was the standard tom bracket that used the eyebolt to grip an "L" rod and there was the clip type "Sturdi-Loc" used for concert toms. There were probably at least a few double headed toms that ended up with the clips and vise-versa but for the most part the clips were only used on concert toms and some marching drums like timp toms. Either one was bolted right to the shell, there were no isolation options offered by Ludwig although the original RIMS became available at some point in the mid 70's as an aftermarket product.
Here's a shot if the Modular mounts, they used a 1" tom arm going into the shell a lot like pearl's 7/8" version.
Ludwig came up with all kinds of interesting ways to mount drums and cymbals off of just the bass drum mounts, most of which involved extra tom brackets and 1" tubing. My personal favorites were "out riggers" and the double bass drum stabilizer.
