Oh,the SHAME...of masonite-

Loading...

I am now the proud owner of the Slingerland Masonite drums I posted about a year ago, no longer being able to bear the guilt of directing my good friend to BUY THOSE DRUMS. I'm sure they never left the original owners home, as the wrap is unblemished. Too bad Masonite wrinkles up under tension. I have a complete set of 5 pieces worth of vintage Slingy hardware, minus the FT rims which he needed for another drum. I've considered stave shells, Slingy orphans, Keller b-grades and reapplying the wrap. What do you guys think?

So the shells will wrinkle under tension you say. So there no good at all? They look real nice!

I had a blue siver duco 60's snare drum and bass drum. I was able to play mine with no problem. they sounded great infact. The snare drum I tensioned up to normal tension I use on all my snare drums with my tama tension watch. 80 on top and 85 on the bottom.

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

I second the orphans and reapply the wrap.

Or get new wrap from precision, then you can actually choose a finish, something we vintage fiends don't always get to do.

Wait a minute. Maybe I am late to the party on this, but Slingerland made shells that were Masonite? Really? Was this their hanging on for dear life part of their existence?

Someone here once mentioned that some Taiwan drums/CB 700 drums were made of Masonite or even cardboard. Does anyone know this for sure?

Have you considered having some re rings made up for the edges.. and I know a guy who had some crappy luan shells lined with fibreglass... now solid as a rock.. could be a project..?

The mounted toms and snare are ruined, as the wrinkling extends down almost to the top of the lug. I'd considered trimming the wrinkles off and relocating the lugs but, to be honest, these shells are turds. I have some Remo Acousticons which are MUCH better shells than these. If, after I get this set rebuilt HOWEVER it happens, if someone wants to play with rerings, epoxy or whatever, more power to you. You can have all the shells for the shipping...
