Repair/Replace Tambourine Head

Loading...

Hi,

I have an old tambourine whose head is starting to tear from the shell. It was fairly inexpensive but it's been a real special instrument so far and so I'd like to repair the head if possible. Can anyone offer any tips or resources on how to go about this?

Thanks!

Remove the tacks, remove old head, get a fresh piece of calf, or goat skin, re-tack & trim, done deal. Fun afternoon project. Contact our member Conn. Pro Percussion for the skin.

From Purdie Shuffle

Remove the tacks . . . re-tack & trim

Thanks John…it's that stuff above I'm not sure about. Is it as easy as popping off the old tacks, putting on a new skin, re-tacking? Or is there stretching, glueing, prep, etc. involved?

It's an easy job. You'll need:

Tack puller - and if the tacks are damaged as you pull them, you can buy fresh tacks at Home Depot, or Lowes, one of those.

Tack hammer

Fresh head

Remove the tacks and the old head. Soak the new skin for about 10 minutes in warm water. The head will be soft and stretchy. Tack one side, then pull it from the other/opposite side and tack. Repeat going around the tambourine always tacking opposite sides, like tuning a drum. Once all the tacks are back in allow the head to dry thoroughly. It will tighten up as it dries and go up in pitch until it is dry and stable. After it's dried, trim the excess and you're good to go for another 100,000 miles. Two hour job from start to finish. You can do it.
