As I said, the kit sounds beautiful. It looks like an old war horse, battered but functional. I like it a lot.

I would appreciate any comments you guys might have. I am interested in trying to date the kit, and in finding out what is original and non-original (i.e. the spurs). The TT mount is a Catalina/Ludwig combo that works well but is perhaps not too pretty.

If I come to love this kit, I will consider renovating it in one way or another, keeping it as a player's kit, but making it look really nice again.

I'm digging this topic up again, since I am still curious about a couple of things regarding my Round Badge kit. I've been playing it regularly since I posted the above now, so I am well aware of how fantastic it sounds.

Firstly, I am still interested to know why the two bass drum spurs (picture above in this thread) don't look the same, but still are original. Are they from two different eras?

Secondly, I cannot find any traces of the banana-shaped bass drum mount, that I assumed would be typical of the 1960s. On the picture below you can see the only drillings/holes that are visible on the bass drum. Above in this thread there is a picture of the inside of the BD, which may give a better indication of what the previous mount may have looked like. Were there other Gretsch mounts than the "bananas" in the RB era?

Those two spurs were both available in the early 60s . The one with the threads at the pointy end is missing the double end foot for it . It is hard to know which one came originally on your set though as they were both out at the same time .

Since I got this kit, my first RBs, I've completed it with tone controls, a Pratt, and now, today, a Maxwell rail consolette system that I found used in Germany. I was afraid that the rail mount would affect the tom and bass drum sound negatively. To my big surprise, both drums really opened up with the vintage system. They sounded good before, now they sound even gooder! The bass drum has been fitted with several tom mounts over the years, and the muddle of holes left when I removed the Catalina mount was covered with a chrome blanking plate that I found at Sound Attak in the UK - great item.
