Here's Some Pics of Baxter Drums...

Loading...

Here's a few pictures of a kit. I don't read much about Baxter drums, what little I can find is that they were perhaps made in the 80's or 90's?

This kit certainly screams 60's or 70's, just by the hardware and the Japan markings on it...would love to find out more about the company or date of manufacture. A real nice red pearl finish, which was the whole reason for buying the kit. (I don't need another kit!) But after looking at the cost of re-wrapping my drums, I think this will cure my itch just fine.

That's awesome! Glad you were able to get your mount welded. Did the repair ruin the chrome? You have a close-up pic of the repair?

On another note, I restored a kit of this color earlier this year. I recommend you install some natural wood hoops (like you have on the batter side) on both sides and apply some polyurethane (or some marine polyurethane - can't remember exactly what I used). It will bring out the grain and natural beauty of the wood and look awesome with that red pearl wrap. The can of the stuff I used is back in California, otherwise I would look. Others will chime in here for the right stuff to use. Several coats (3 or 4) with drying in between - will turn out beautiful.

Here is a pic to give you an idea of what you can achieve.

Hey Drummerjohn333,

Thanks for writing - your kit looks fantastic!

Yes, I might consider getting a second maple hoop to match the other one. One side of my bass drum has the correct Baxter tension rods and hoop, whereas the maple-hoop-side has aftermarket ones. I guess the original hoop and parts got lost somewhere over the years...isn't that what happens to old drum kits? :)

Is yours a Baxter kit as well? Any additional info on dates?

Hi robyn64 - thanks for the note. I don't know anything about the Baxter line of drums (growing up I had Stewart and Bolero) so I don't know if the finish is unusual or not?

That Red kit I restored is a Star made kit from 1968 or after. It has been sold, but I still have the hoops that I will use on something else I have. I also have a Vintage Remo reso head that I did up.

I don`t know much about Baxter drums except i recall seeing them as far back as the 70`s.Entry level drum sets with the coolest of wraps to choose from.Bet that wood has mellowed nicely and they must sound very warm.Nice set...

Good to hear you were able to repair the tom mount! What are the sizes 13-16-22?

I think your drums are a pearl or possibly a hoshino made stencil kit. It looks like you have the thicker shells which I believe were switched to some time about 67-69. There are folks here who know better that I hopefully someone will be able to id them more accurately for you.

As far as the wrap goes I've seen a bunch of drums in the read pearl finish so I don't think it is uncommon. I have an unbadged snare as well as a crown 12" tom and 20" 8 lug bass drum in that color, all with the thin shells and star lugs.

Hi thomasehirshiii,

The shell sizes are 12, 14, and 20". Very interesting about the stencil information (Pearl or Hoshino...these certainly appear older than what I have been reading about Baxter.)

Some previous posts on Baxter here seem to indicate that they are likely Hoshino, based on the H shaped badge, made for sale primarily in your neck of the wods. There appears to be newer MIT versions of Baxter drums out ther but your wrap and lugs definitely look late 60s or 70s to me.

If you decide to go with the maple hoops and want to sell the original hop let me know I've been looking for wood MIJ replacement hoops for my red pearl bass drum for a while....

Wood hoops!! +1

Also - I really wanted to claim that this Baxter kit was Pearl, but I just could not bring myself to. Biggest thing is the design of the rail mount - and yes, I see now that the H shaped badged - looks like the Hoshino badge. Could indeed be the 3rd 60s-70s MIJ manufacturer rearing its head here.
