Do I clean it up or leave it alone. My snare looks like it has copper rims. Dirty copper rims. Do I hurt the value when cleaning them? It also has some sort of gold leaf material on top of the brass. How can I restore that?

Hold on! Wait for Mike Curotto or someone else with a lot of experience with these things can chime in. Throw some pictures on here too so everyone can see what you're dealing with!

The bottom drum looked like the top drum....thanks to our webmaster for getting the photos back up!
I wouldn't do any restoration or cleaning without check with Mike C first, or at least putting photos here and getting some opinions.
"gold leaf" and copper looking rims sounds like a stiplegold or ludwigold drum.
Those finishes didn't hold up well and many were "ruined" by well meaning restorers...leave it alone for now!
