Re-gluing loose wrap - glass sparkle

Loading...

One of the seams is lifted on a Slingerland bass drum project that I'm working on.

It's the overlaped seam down under one of the spurs and it's loose about 50% along the seam, and maybe 2-3 inches upwards.. The loose wrap is slightly curled and rigid but it's still pretty flat. I'll add some better pictures tonight. I'm planning on regluing it with 3M contact adhesive.

My first priority is carefully cleaning the lumpy old hard contact cement without damaging the old wrap. What is a safe solvent to use for this? Mineral spirits? Goof-Off?

Does anyone have an old regluing thread handy they can point me to?

Thanks,

Mark

Mark - It's an easy repair, not to worry.

You'll need:

2 - clamps

1 - piece of wood long enough to run the length of the seam

2 - a good, stiff toothbrush

1 - Blue painters tape (or similar product)

Tape off both side of the seam with strips of painters tape. This will prevent any glue squeeze out from damaging the wrap.

Use the toothbrush to scrub out as much residue as you can. Apply the glue and allow to go 'tack-dry' before clamping it down. Place the length of wood over the seam and clamp down on both ends. Allow a full 24 hours for the glue to cure/dry before removing the clamps. Remove the tape, clean and polish the shell and you're good to go for another 100,000 miles.

This one had two seams, but you get the idea from the photo I hope.

John.

Not to worry. If using the 3M water based cement, a little spillage on the wrap won't hurt,

It's not a lacquer base glue, so it won't eat away anything. If there is a little spillage, just take your thumb or finger and roll it up. Kind of like a booger in between your fingers.:DLoLoLoLo

Funny, it was the first thing I thought of when I read your post. I went right over to You Tube and found it. It was 'apropo' as they say... :D
