60's Ludwigs in Black Oyster Pearl

Loading...

Hi all,

I just ran across a set of Ludwigs at a pawn shop and am a little confused. The finish is black oyster pearl and looks to be original. The floor tom is a 14x14 with keystone badge and the bass is I believe a 20" with keystone badge. The mounted tom has a b/o badge but looks like it may have been tampered with. The interiors are all clear wood (not white). All of the wraps seem to match so the badge difference and non-white interiors is throwing me off. Also the bass spurs are non-original but it appears that they at least used the same holes. Can anyone give me an idea of what the year might be based on the badges and interiors? I may need to check them out again. Also a ballpark value would be helpful. I'd rate their condition about 7/10. Thanks a lot!

Reinforcement rings? Would indicate 3-ply, of course hard to say in general w/o pics.

Snap them up if you think the price is right.

Can someone shed some light on whether the interiors should be white or not? They do have re-rings. I'll see if I can get the serial numbers which could help.

Guessing with the clear interiors, late '60's early '70's.

I've got a '72 Ludwig kit w/ clear interiors and re-rings, B/O badges.

It's a pawn shop. They shouldn't be asking top dollar for the kit. You also shouldn't worry about the different badges. There are numerous cases at that late 60's early 70's where there are mixed badges. It was the transition period for the Ludwig/Selmer/GMC/Nintendo/KFC conglomerate. As numerous people have stated, the badges at that time were hit and miss. Some of the drums went out without badges. Don't fret. If the kit is nice and the price is right, pick it up. You've not mentioned what they are asking for the kit. That's a piece of info that is needed here.

They have the price listed at $599 but of course the guy said they would take less. I'm just not sure how much less. It also comes with a snare but it is just a chrome Standard.

600 for a BOP kit...Hmmmm This is a very "collectable" kit (whatever that means). People like these for that "Ringo" connection, I guess.

That puts it at a good price point - if there is nothing wrong with the kit. We don't have pics and such, so that part is on you. You will need to take the heads off and check the shells carefully. Pay attention to the edges, the screws and holes, the rerings, and such. Look for any damage or abuse. Also, while you're in there, look for a date stamp in each of these. Get the whole picture of the kit. Let the shells speak to you about their life. When you have it all, then make a decision. Offer what you think is a fair price. If you believe 600 is fair, then offer that. If you believe 450 is fair, then go that route. It's really up to you on the value. We don't have enough info without pics of the inside and outside of the kit. I can tell you, if it were me I'd be very interested in that kit. Those clear shells are wonderful - some of my favorites. Keep us informed as to what you do. But, don't sit on this one. It will go pretty fast once word gets out.

Not necessarily. They have a clear inside which dates them to late 60's-early 70's. There is also a B/O badge. I would have trouble placing these in the early 60's. The evidence points at the end of the 60's to the beginning of the 70's. When the serial numbers are known, a more precise timeline can be established.
