Obviously Sonor also have undocumented models in catalogues,like other produces,in that time.

I have similar snare from that time,but different.Snare strainers and but side are like on D420 pancake, magnet don't stick to it, and have that central reinforcement channel.Welded on seam

And Sonor experts from Vintage Sonor site,also are not sure what model it is...

Yes and they all appear in the very early 70`s when SONOR had to lose the foundry due to changed German Plating laws. Sending out to plate caused the Raw materials Foundry to close. SONOR was in a bit of a rut. They recovered during the mid 70`s.

Your shell is interesting, three crimps. The OP has a strait shell that appears on a cataloged 71 D426 parallel snare. But the parallel one has bowtie lugs made for a single bead drum shell. Yours has lugs suited for the strait shell. On a 60`s 444 these lugs have the bead cut-out in them. The Links were very detailed and to see things like airspace under a lug or a lug for single bead on a flat shell,...indicates the hard time adjustments. It is too bad SONOR didn`t keep records at this time or before it. Things could be simplified. But for now the best that can be said is a ..."Factory Frank"

Do you have exact weights on these drum`s stripped shells ? I can give you a 14"X5" Ferro weight.

The best theory I can come up with for these "Franks" is that during this time SONOR messed with Stainless Steel. No Known SS snares. I know of four Stainless SONOR Champion kits, but no known snares with those kits.

It`s the theory I lean toward for now.

Dule yours is the one I`m thinking about, the OP has it in a Catalog. That vent don`t look chrome, and the cut is de-burred. SS in a lot of grades is non magnetic. But I need a weight or it in my hand.

My shell actually has 2 crimps, difficult to see as they're located just above the hoops upper and lower. Also my shell similarly to Dules' is not a seamless shell but rather a welded seamed shell, which is why I thought it could be Chrome over brass. I'm digging playing the mutha though. Not really thinking about dissassembling but if I do, Oddball, what's the weight of yours? In any case it would be relatively easy to determine the composition if I remove all the parts.. And, it is possible it's Stainless steel or Chrome Over brass.. There is no pitting or anything like that, but I just suspended my impatience and put it on my kit to play it. It has a sharper, piercing tone a tad louder than my Supraphonic 400, which has more roundness to the tone (maybe from the center bead) interesting Sonor was going with a similar-to-Ludwig shell design by the 70s.. The welding on my shell seems to look lead-like, not sure if that would've been a no-no for their environmental regulations.. I think the "beer tap" throwoff is amazing compared to the earlier round plastic throws they had which were prone to breaking, and the losing of the chrome cap..

Ok, I realize this is a very old thread, but I haven’t been on here for quite a long time. I was just trying to find information on the same snare drum. I have the same drum. I got it when I was about 6 years old, so around 1970. It has always been my go to snare drum because it sounds awesome. It didn’t come with a logo on the drum. Although it is a seemed shell, the shell itself is chrome over brass. Mine does not have any pitting, but it does have small “bumps” in the chrome on the teardrop lugs. Great drum. If anyone has more information, please share!
