Remo Weather King Vintage A Drum Head

Loading...

A recent floor tom purchase came with Remo Weather King Vintage A drum head. Weight and texture seem to be identical to the OEM Rogers heads I have. Definitely different but failry close to a coated Ambassador. This is the first time I've seen this model.

Anyone know if these are still available? Anyone using them?

Thanks for any feedback.

Dan!

Absolutely still available! REMO only came out with these a couple years ago. I use them all way 'round on my Rogers kits. They are made to "recreate" the original Coated Ambassador that started it all back in 1957. As such, the mil thickness is SUPERB in sound/feel as OEM back in the day. This would be the weight/style that Rogers supplied. I love 'em! They are also available in the Emperor weight as well. BEST heads I have found yet for my Rogers kits! .. but again .. this is as we all know, completely subjective to personal opinion. That said though, I think you would like them a lot on your Rogers kits. These are all REMO Vintage A's in the pic of my 1965 Rogers Buddy Rich Celebrity's... except the EVANS EMAD coated on the bass drum of course... but that's a different story!

That is a beautiful kit Tommy! So do you use the second floor tom or is it a towel holder like Buddy used it,lol.

Glad to hear the input on the vintage heads, I was wondering about them myself.

Thank you!

Tommy, whether one likes these heads is completely subjective, but I agree with you 100%. Love these heads, especially on Powertones!

Great and quick confirmation on that guys! I'm sensing some love for those heads. I will definitely be looking into a supply for my keeper Rogers kits.

Tommyp: I also use a more modern batter on the bass. I have Evans EQ 3 there and it generally works well without any additional interior muffling on the 20" bass. Earlier in the year I was putting a pillow in a 22 because it seemed to need it under mic'ing.

Thanks for that quick feedback!

PS - I've tried to keep original Rogers heads on when possible, and in particular, the resonant side of my toms that won't take a beating. I believe it has improved the sound and avoids some of the ring that comes with other heads, so I'm looking forward to getting the Vintage A's all around. I have one kit that has Rogers heads top and bottom, and it sounds considerably better than with Ambassadors, which is my second choice. Now it seems I can have those heads again and not be concerned for consuming them.

Jeff!

I do!... actually use the back 16X16! This particular night I purposely placed a towel on the drum for all my BR buddies that thought I should! It hasn't been there since. Of interest: Buddy DID play his 2nd 16x16 early on in his career, all the way through his Rogers endorsement which ended in 1967. ( there was an exception here and there of course ) From that point on, he really never played the 2nd 16X16 again. He used it for a towel rack!, or to hold other items of interest. At one concert he had an old "bulb horn" sitting on that drum.. and .. he did in fact honk it a few times during the concert. He must have been in a playful mood that night! GLAD you liked the kit!, and THANKS for the kind words!

Powertone!

Yes indeed!, and... I said the same towards the bottom of my prose: ..."this is as we all know, completely subjective to personal opinion" ... that said, I know why you agree here too! Just GREAT playing/sounding heads, and especially so on Rogers from our experience!

Dan!

The EVANS coated EMAD has been absolutely great for me since they came out, although yeah, today... drummer's have so many MORE choices then we did back in the day. That said though: The bass drum is WIDE OPEN with just a felt strip on the front/resonant head. No other muffling. The coated EMAD gives me a nice vintage AND contemporary sound at the same time. I have never looked elsewhere as this set up is it... for me. As we all say to the point of being repetitive: Completely subjective to personal opinion of course! There is no right or wrong. Regarding OEM Rogers resonant heads:

Same! I have ALL Rogers logo coated Ambassadors on the resonant sides of the toms. With those and the REMO Vintage A's batter side, wow... what a combination! BEST combination I have ever found! I have a couple snare drums set up with the REMO Vintage Coated Emperors, and those heads are also fabulous!

Perfect thread timing for me. I was thinking about getting Vintage A heads, as batters, for my late 50's Rogers Duco kit (13/15/22). Now I think I'll give them a try. I also still have the original reso heads, which just need to be cleaned.

I've used both the vintage A and vintage emperors the coating wears out fast is my only complaint.

That's a bunmer. I have a special order pre-international 12" Ambassador, which did the same. I hope this does not become the new norm. :(
