Info request on the "Made In Japan" drums

Loading...

Greetings. I am finishing a refurb on these "Made In Japan" drums for a customer, whose brother bought them used in the 1970s. Other than seeing the badge listed on the VDG page, I have not found any info on them. The owner is interested in the manufacturer, and approximate year of manufacture, as well as any other info available. Thanks in advance for your replies! The top part of the tom arm (the piece that the toms slide onto) was missing, so I had to fabricate a new one.

The ends of this tom rail are very distinctive, I think.

Here's the badge:

The only thing I am lacking to complete this is an assortment of t-rods. They are not standard thread, nor do Premiers thread fit them. Any leads to get 4 tom rods and 8 floor tom rods are also appreciated. Thanks again!!

The tom rods are 1 3/4" length, and the floor tom rods are 2 1/2" length. Hope that helps. Thanks again.

Take a removed lug down to a real hardware store to find out what the threads are, whether standard or metric and what pitch. Then our group of experts can help with their replacement. Or pull the inserts and replace them with standard ones and be done with it.

I'm not sure who has The Vintage Japanese Drums page on facebook, but he believes they are made by Star in '72-'73. The BD only had one hoop when I received them, and I found a matching one from a '70s Tama Imperialstar.

All of the hardware points to Star in my opinion. I have a set of Supremes (stencil of Star) and they are identical except for the badge.

Do the interior plies have a diagonal seam? This was asked of me by the guy on the facebook page, and mine do, which he believes to be a Star indication.

Curious.

I know from other 'Made in Japan'-badged kits, that they were clearly visible made by Pearl. But this one states 'clearly visible that it's made by Star'.

The double tom holder appears to be a modification: normally the tom arms on this genuine Star rail consolette came separate - only! I've never come across a double version. Can you see any traces of foreign welding at the horizontal bar, which holds both 'slip-on' adapters?

Cheers, Ralf

Yes, Ralf. I made that double arm, as the owner had lost the original(s). He has also lost the cymbal arm, a 16" hoop, a 12" hoop, BD spurs (which I also made), and a lot of tension rods.

These are from Star. The bass rods are one of the tells, as would be the off sized lugs and the funky threads used. Pearl would be easily able to accept any modern lugs.

The diamond shaped (for lack of better term) end of the consolette bar has always been a Star feature.

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!
