Restoring bass drum rail tom mount

Loading...

Hi all,

I recently bought a Star kit which needs a fair bit of loving, and part in particular is the bass drum tom mount. The chrome (or whatever is covering it) is in pretty poor condition and I was wondering what the best way to deal with it is?

I hear that having it professionally re chromed is quite expensive, so i was thinking, what would it look like if i stripped the chrome off and cleaned and polished the metal? Do you think that it could look okay like that? Alternatively, do I just leave it? Sorry for all the questions, but im at a bit of a loss and am completely new to all this.

Thanks for all the help!

Mitch any of the rust remover products on the market should do. I use coke and tin foil myself with very good results. This will remove the rust but cannot fix the bubbled chrome sometimes left behind. Last ditch effort you can remove the old rusty finish with a wire wheel and just polish the metal. But I'd try the rust removers first then decide. Post some pics if you can. So we can see what your working with.

I think that has the potential to look pretty darn neat!....you might want to do it to all the chromed parts, though a clear coat would likely be needed to prevent rapid wholesale rusting...

I would leave it as is. Clean and polish it the best you can,. It'll give your vintage kit character.

Im just worried that any attempt at cleaning will further strip away the chrome anyway, as it is peeling off very easily at the moment.

If you're going to move the kit around for gigs and such, you'll want to get all flaking chrome off of there, to prevent it ending up embedded in your fingers.

If the kit will sit, just clean as carefully as you can. Large flaked off areas could be brushed in with silver paint or left bare metal...

Thanks for all the replies and handy advice. I think I will strip it bare, and then polish it up as nicely as possible.

Thanks,

Mitch.
