Vintage W&A Kit Restoration

Loading...

As advertized, here are some shots of the misc. parts and hardware that I got with the kit. If Jeremy, or anybody can identify any of the parts, especially the ones with (?) marks next to them, it would be great and add more interest to the resto project. It's all rusted over, but it can all be saved. As soon as I'm able to, I'll start detailing these old parts. see image below

This one is hard to see because of the busy background in the photo, but it's a really cool, old cymbal stand. Straight on top, no cymbal-tilter. It is threaded for a cup, washer, felt and wing nut. The cymbal would sit flat on top, Buddy Rich style. see image below

More parts...

see images below

If you know any info on any one of these parts, you have the floor.

Schmokem if you got em...

I saw an earlier post with a short discussion about the tension and tuning of the tacked on heads, and that they were simply pulled tighter or looser, but after that the sound would not change.

I've noticed with Native American water drums, and with the hide skins on drums used during Longhouse and other rituals, that these hide drums were tacked on as well, but that they easily changed the tone of each drum simply by moistening the drumhead with water. It was surprising to hear an oddly sounding drum changing quickly to a rich pleasing sound after the application of water to the head. Obviously, they would have to re-apply moisture for each performance, but it was an easy process to change a tacked drum's tone.

Just passing it along, maybe the older jazz player did this too, back in the day.

John that very last part looks like a bass drum spur. Not posiitive but does look like one. Missing the original screw though. The thing with the rings is part of a Lawrence Welk champagne bubble maker. :D

Glenn.

Merry Christmas Eve Everyone!

OK... The hihat stand was made by W&A. It appears to be built before the 502 model. It's probably W&A's first version of the hihat! Very cool! Definitely early -mid 30's. This also makes me believe that the drum set is from the same time.

The cymbal stand was not made by w&a. No ear mounts off the outer collar leg mounts.

The 3 ring device puzzles me. I'll ask Harry Cangany... It doesn't appear to be made by w&a.

The bass drum cymbal stand looks like w&a... I would need a better look at the mount section.

The cowbell mount looks w&a but it's missing the piece that protects the screw from touching the hoop. The screw doesn't look original either.

Same for the small bass drum spur.

Walberg and Auge - A Historical Preservation Drum Company
W&A is back since 1978 to preserve its historical significance as America's most innovative drum company and to continue the tradition of building ‘Perfection’ drums.

Would you look at that? Looks like a similar design to the one you see on older kits, that look like a big ol' spring.

This thread oficially is my new favorite thing.

I see what you mean about the Duplus stand. You have to clean that stick holder up and mount it somewhere with the finished set up kit.
