Slingerland re-veneer

Loading...

I am new here, but not new to vintage drums. I have been a member of several other forums for a while, but am glad to find y'all here. I look forward to learning and participating here.

Anyway, I have cleaned up quite a few old drums, and have also been doing some major refurb projects on a few that need more than just cleaning up. Though I'd show off a recent project:

Slingerland 5.5" x 14" mahogany/poplar/maple snare, estimated late 50's, or around 1960. It was painted multiple times when I got it, but was originally duco. I am not a fan of duco finish and there was no way to strip just to the duco anyway. I removed the paint, but the outer maple veneer had paint embedded deeply into the grain. I tried numerous things to remove it to no avail, so I decided to veneer it. This one got a nice piece of curly maple.

I sanded down the outer ply:

Worked on fitting the veneer and cutting the joint:

Applied glue to the shell:

Applied glue to the veneer. I tried using the caulk tube as a roller to evenly spread the glue but it was too slippery and did not work well at all, I ended up just brushing the glue on with a nylon bristle paintbrush... worked fine:

Wrapped the veneer on and taped the joint:

Then trimmed the excess width of the veneer off, and used nylon fabric and duct tape manually wrapped very tightly as the "clamping" scheme.

Note: this technique worked very well for this snare dum, but I tried it on a larger 18" bass drum and had problems. the nylon wrap clamping system is inadequate for larger shells.

Hmm, limit of 6 images...

I had a little weirdness with the veneer at one edge and had to fill it a couple times with an epoxy filler so it was totally solid. Otherwise, the veneer is solid. I worked the edges and here it is ready to recut the holes and finish:

The end result after finishing with some stain and wipe on poly:

Very nice job. How does it sound? Did the extra layer give you problems with head fit? Love the light and cool feel of that maple.

Sounds pretty much just like it did prior to the work. Edges are still original. Remo ambassador head is a snug fit, but not tight, just fine.

Very nice finish. I will actually be doing some finish work on some drums I am building (hopefully soon). Can I ask what type of 'stain and poly' you used to finish that drum?

Thanks!

The stain is old minwax penetrating stain I have had around for probably over 15 years, golden oak color. I'll warn you that though it worked well on this piece, I tried in on some flat cut veneer on another project and it was horrible... absolutely ruined it! The poly is miwax wipe on satin poly over mcfaddens gel. The gel builds really fast, and the minwax finishes out better for the top several coats.

Thanks for the tip, I can't imagine how mad I would be if I got to the finishing touches only to ruin my shell!

Here is what I want to do. I will be taking a 6 ply maple shell (I assume just normal grain maple) and I want to make it super high gloss. I will be putting gold or brass hardware on it, and I want the wood shell to shine! What would you suggest I do to accomplish this?

Thanks,

Kevin

I am no expert on achieving a high gloss finish. I prefer and finish everything in satin.

You might search the ghostenote or woodworking/woodfinishing forums.

As for the bass drum veneer that I ruined with that stain, I will doing the third re-veneering attempt on that one when a new sheet of veneer shows up at my door. I hope the third time is the charm.
