Clarification on BONHAM toms

Loading...

Since my honesty has been questioned here, I have been researching the tom toms I have that I listed as Bonham. On Monday I will try and contact Ludwig, but there is some information now. Thanks to Ludwig-dude who has helped clarify the situation with my tom-toms:

Bonham did play stainless steel drums, but the sizes were: 12x15, 16x16, 16x18, and 14x26. The size drums you have are not "Bonham" drums per se. They 16x16 is a size that he used, but the 8x12 is not. They are probaby from a "Big Beat" set, which would have been 8x12, 9x13, 16x16, and 14x22. Also, they are not covered in a chrome steel wrap, the drums are actual stainless steel all the way through, as are the reissue drums. Hope this helps clear some things up....

Thanks Ludwig-dude for being of help! My dilema now is how to sell these. If my 16X16 stainless steel drum is the exact same drum as the 16X16 on the Bonham sets, it was just a decison someone at the Ludwig plant made that made this 16X16 end up in the other set. If I sell this, I will explain that to the buyer; however, if someone buys this and wants to sell it, do you think they will say "16X16 stainless steel Ludwig floor tomtom from he late 70's, exactly like the 16X16's from the Bonham set, but probably frim a Big Beat set." I doubt it.

Would anyone disagree that the 16X16 I have is probably worth the same as one that came from a Bonham set? If not, I am interested in hearing from any sane individuals here who have more to offer than biased opinions.

A 16x16 stainless floor tom is worth the same when sold by itself no matter what configuration kit it originally came from. Worth no more or no less because no one knows for sure what set it came from originally. However, you stated previously that you had a 9x13 matching tom that you sold previously and also you still have the 8x12, so this would lead me to believe it was part of a "big beat" kit. The only way one 16x16 stainless floor tom would be worth any more than another would be if it was actually owned and played by Bonham, you know from his actual kit. I believe that kit has been accounted for so the possibility that yours would be a drum actually owned by Bonham would be slim. Don't get me wrong, it is worth more than the average 16x16 Ludwig floor tom due to its rarity being a stainless steel drum, so don't let that deter you from getting a good price on it in todays market. Chances are someone who wants to do a stainless steel Bonham replica/tribute kit would be interested in it. The 8x12 might be little tougher to sell than the 16x16 because if someone is looking to make a tribute/replica kit, it is not the correct size tom for that. However, someone with a stainless "big beat" kit that has a damaged tom or a missing tom might be interested in it as well....so don't get discouraged if the 8x12 doesn't sell as fast as the 16x16 does.

The point is there WAS NO OFFICIAL BONHAM SET. The issued preconfigured kits did not contain the sizes he "officially" used with Zep. Basically, he made up his own, and being who he was Ludwig delivered.

So by default, the 16 you have was never part of a "Bonham" kit as there was no such "official" configuration. It is merely one of the sizes Bonham used.

Do you see the difference?

There was no official Ludwig Configured or marketed Bonham setup, so the only "official" one would have been the ONE kit he used.

Ah, you got me on that one...this is true as there was no official Bonham kit until the recent reissues.....I've read that the rack tom and bass drum were actually stainless marching drums fitted with outfit hardware by ludwig for Bonham.

I asked if the toms were still for sale, and to see pics of the toms, and after 4 or 5 emails, I was asked if Iwanted to talk money, and I declined. Here is the last email I received from vibeguy56.

"That was a lot of emailing just about drums you seemed interested in, yet never talked about money? Another set up from the drumforum.org? You will not catch me being dishonest about my stuff. nice try"

Do you believe that freakin' s#$t!!!!???

This entire situation is getting more and more odd as the days go by. I really don't know what the situation is with the Stainless toms.

He seems to think DFO is out to get him. His paranoia is way out of proportion as it's just the opposite. We were trying to get a handle on his hatred for scams and some members there were a bit confused at his trying to sell the Stainless toms under the "Bonham" moniker when in fact only the 16 in floor was something Bonham would have used.

He seems to have taken the issue WAY to seriously.

Really, no matter HOW you slice it, it's the internet, WHO CARES!!! It's not worth getting all worked up over.

We should probably bake a pie or something. That's what I do out here. Everybody loves pie!

So, we are not angry with you. We are not questioning your ethics. We really honestly don't have any emotions invested in this. It's just a couple of drums. That's it. Please, don't feel slighted. We are a bunch of good drummin' guys (and girls, I believe). So, kick you shoes off and stay awhile. It's a great place to learn a thing or two.

Paul Thompson ( who owns the bonham thermogloss maple kit) has responded to my question the size of the rack tom. here is what he said...

Hi Brendan,

You are right it is a 14" racktom that was cut down (NOT BY ME !) I think the confusion comes from the fact that the Kit was a copy of Carmine Appices outfit which DID have a 15" rack tom. I have two 26" bass drums ! Bonzo only ever used them once from what I can gather, although I do have a video of Communication Breakdown where he is using the full double kit.

thanks for your interest, I hope this is of help!

all the best,

Paul

Some people disagree and say the tom is actually 15x12 and was cut down.

so there you have it doubters. ahem.

this was all posted at his forum

http://pub17.bravenet.com/forum/stat...16863&cmd=show

so check it out for yourself. "

Ok, I NEVER claimed that the 15" tom was cut down. All I said is it was a 15" tom, not a 14".

One more point....Paul does state that it was a copy of Carmine's kit. And it DID have a 15" tom. However he also contradicts himself by stating that the tom the kit NOW has is a 14 and was cut down.

Consider this theory: The original 15" tom was lost, damaged or stolen then later replaced with whatever Ludwig had in stock closest in size in that finish at the time. Or.....when Bonham ordered the 16x16 floor tom to match the rest of the kit when he took away the second bass drum, he also ordered a 14" tom to match. Then sometime later the drum got damaged and was cut down, either by him or a subsequent owner prior to Paul owning the kit.

No one will know for sure because the only guy who really knows for sure has been dead for almost 30 years.

Now with that said, I'm moving on because I know I'm still correct in my statement that the ORIGINAL DOUBLE BASS KIT owned by Bonham was an exact DUPLICATE of Carmine Appice's kit....12x15 tom and all.

Next!........
