Ludwig Standard Restoration

I picked up this kit on the bay recently. Actually, I was at work and the wife won this for me. Kiss Ain't love grand!

It's a 22x14, 16x16, 13x9, 14x5.5 8 lug snare. All correct hardware - foot pedal, hi-hat stand, snare stand, cymbal stand, bass mount cymbal arm, bass mount tom mount.

It came to me in very good condition. I really didn't have to do much. I repaired a rering on the 13 and a tiny piece on the bass. That was it. I disassembled the kit and cleaned it inside and out. All parts got the usual scrub and polish and wax.

I completed the tom and the floor tom yesterday. I finished the snare today. All the stands and such are also finished. Still working on the bass. One screw went haywire and I had to order up some spare lugs. Thanks LuddyDude for the warning. That kept me from really buggerin' up the whole kit 'n caboodle.

The floor tom is my favorite. It shows the finish well. The hardware cleaned up very nicely.

What a nice sound. These really speak. Oddly enough, they sound exactly like the gold sparkle kit...hmmmmm.;)

Yes. I thought about it...for sure. But, that is Bronze Strata and seems to be missing the white marine pearl piece of the coloring. It's more of a bronze and black mix. If it's there, it's very very minimal. I like it, but would prefer the gold strata. I've seen the gold strata and it has plenty of that wonderful white marine pearl mixed in with it. The blue strata does too. Nice effect. Of course, it may be that run of the wrap. I don't know 'cause I've not seen a huge amount of these kits to compare.

I'm looking for a Standard kit in smaller sizes...also, a really good gold strata. I included a shot of the gold strata. Nice wrap.

BUT I"M NOT COLLECTING!!!

Oooooo mcjnic - nice score! I only own 3 pieces of strata - (4 really), a gold strata snare & 13" tom (my 4th was a 13" blue strata with destroyed wrap that I got to just to get a re-ring for my other gold strata piccolo project drum - another story yet to be told).

Those golds & bronzes can be hard to photograph and hence, confusing to ID. With my snare, despite a Ludwig employee confirming Gold status, I compared online pics for a year. A lot of people confuse the two, and even the lemon and gold. I think you're right about the wrap batches - plus aging effects, but the big bugger is how hard they are to photograph.

Here's a link to my old thread here that was ultimately a resolution for me :

Re: sizes - the old Standard price list puts the snare at 5" x 14" - idk if they had any variations - That list also has some nice sizes that I haven't seen, but would love to find - like a single head 8" tom - schweeeet! Yes Sir

...but when he played on his drum, he made the stars explode....

Thanks for the offer. Unfortunately, I already paid too much on ebay for a handful from a 'dealer'. I seem to be the one drum geek that just pays too much for most things. The good news is I am playing the drums. That accounts for something, I'm sure. Doesn't it? ... ... ... Doesn't it? ... ... ... Hello. ... ... ... Is there anybody out there?

Re: sizes - the old Standard price list puts the snare at 5" x 14" - idk if they had any variations -

I concluded the bearing edges are original. I measured the snare several times. It measures edge to edge right at 5 and 1/4 inches. It's more than a 5 inch snare and under a 5 1/2 inch snare. Very cool. Not sure, but I guess Ludwig cut it a tiny bit off when they were leaving room for the bearing edges. Imagine...Ludwig making a mistake when making a drum. Never seen that before. Haven't really tuned it up properly or chosen heads for it. Been buggerin' with it for a short bit. Will get back to it after I've completed the Ludwig Super Classic Snare. That one is my passion at the moment. One stupid little part has stopped me in my tracks. Dang! Hate when that happens.

Pretty much finished. I am still waiting delivery of the bass reso head upon which I will put my "Standard" sticker thingy. I had another "Ludwig" head, so I popped that one on. All in all, this one turned out very nice. All original and very very clean.

1970 Ludwig Standard S-320 in Blue Strata finish

22x14, 16x16, 13x9, 5x14 matching snare

Complete set of hardware

foot pedal

snare stand

hi-hat stand

cymbal stand

bass mount cymbal arm

single tom holder

This one really didn't take much work. Did some rering repair and a bit of cleaning. Had to replace a lug (dang it!). I chose to swap the hoops for the thicker ones. I put the originals aside in order to keep all original parts.

That was pretty much all the work that was necessary. It went together nicely. One of the easiest I've ever done. Plays well. Sounds exactly like the Gold Sparkle kit. Duh! The snare is exceptionally cool. I popped a SkynTone head on that one for giggles. I may swap it out for a Fiberskyn. Hadn't really decided. Anyway, it's done.
