From King Louie

A Kevlar head?Pardon my ignorance but is a rope tensioned drum going to work with a modern marching head?Great looking drum BTW...

King Louie:

I can attest from experience that Kevlar heads work GREAT with rope tension drums. As Matt has already shown in this continuous thread, he made all the rope tension drums for the modern, military brass band of the 1st Company Governor's Foot Guard, Hartford, Connecticut (the Country's oldest, official State militia unit in continuous military service since 1771). Shot of our drums (Matt's creations):

Although Kevlar is not a perfect sonic substitute for calfskin, it's close enough in tonal quality, but unlike calfskin, it's practically indestructable and immune to temperature and humidity changes. And since changing out batter heads on rope tension drums is a time-consuming P.I.T.A (unless you're a pro like Matt), Kevlar provides a huge advantage. When my Remo Powerstroke 4 batter finally gives out, I'm having Matt reinstall a Kevlar head despite the cost ($$$$!)

Here are some pictures of the completed prototype / display drum case.

The cases are put together with copper rivets all around and a sturdy, thick leather. The cases will be tooled with your name in your choice of white, gold leaf, copper leaf or just a tooled outline. It is 18"x18"x8" at its smallest and can expand to accommodate snares up to 15"x*8. The handle is 1.5" wide and the case weighs 7 pounds empty.

A couple new ones from here in the shop, I've had a busy few days.

The first drum is a Lyon & Healy rod tension 17"x10" marching drum. This was an Ebay find that I picked up for a real good price. Under the thick layer of dust I could see that the bones on this one were in great condition and I didn't have to do much to fix this one up.

One of the unusual things about this drum is the internal muffler on the drum which looks like it is an original part.

The other thing on this drum that is also unusual for a marching drum from this time period is the snare adjuster. Patent date 1908.

The adjuster has a throw off on it which is a bit unusual.

The next drum that I have is a Wilson Brothers drum from the early 1900s. The drum is another 17"x10" drum but this one has a mahogany shell but it is every bit as nice as the birds eye maple on the other drum. This drum was received in good condition but was missing ears and the snare adjuster because the previous owner decided to part them out. I hate it when people part out stuff on a good drum. If you think it is hard to find replacement parts for an old Black Beauty, try to find original replacement parts for drums that are pre 1900.

The rope on the drum is old but most likely not original to the drum but since it is in okay condition I am going to keep it on the drum.

You can see the nails holding the hoop together under the red paint.

Leather ears were stained a medium brown.

A replica snare adjuster had to be added to the drum as well as a new leather but end.
