As a sideline to this business of 12x22, we have mentioned the number of lugs on a bass. I had a Leedy 14x20 a few years ago that had 10 lugs each side. Apparently the endorser, Frank Capp, preferred that. I have to wonder if there was any noticible effect in his view. I sure couldn't detect anything significant.

I have a separate promotional flyer for that set with Capp pictured that shows the bass built that way, though oddly enough, the main catalog shows 8 each side. Unfortunately, the picture with him on the set is not with me. Maybe I'll recall to send it along when I get home (in late December Laughing H).

Thanks for all the replies and insight gentlemen, really appreciated and has probably solidified my decision to buy. Now i just gotta save up for it.. It's a friend of mine who's selling so i may not have to hurry up to buy, as he will probably hold it for me until i pay him in full..

As most of you know, these days the economy is more of a survival situation rather than actually living.. This is the globalist elite power structures that the world is dealing with.. Stomp on the little guy, while Daddy Warbucks gets richer.. Soap Box

KO- Lol !! I saw that vid on Youtube when researching it and actually commented on it ! Beautiful kit you have there..

As i mentioned before, i don't think there is much of a difference in a 2 inch depth.. I've heard 22x8 marching bass drums that were powerfully loud with plenty of low end, but had never heard one from a kit context..

My ONLY drum set since 1965. '48 - '52 WFL's, 22x12, 9x13, 16x16. The FT is a Ludwig I bought new in 1965. I never felt under-gunned with the 22x12, play classic rock, and I think the BD outperforms just about any BD I ever played.

PS3 batter w/felt strip, reso is the Weather Master that was on there when I got the set. Who knows how old it really is. Installed a felt strip on it as well.

From Batterhead

My ONLY drum set since 1965.[...]

That fact, plus the actual kit = so cool. Wish I'd had the smarts to keep my 20/12/14 walnut Gretsch kit...

OT slightly... Batterhead, I couldn't help but notice that on your beautiful BDP New Yorker set you have the bass drum unusually positioned, with the spurs on the batter/pedal side of the drum. Made me curious. Wondering if that choice was made deliberately and if so, what benefits do you feel you gain from it?

This is a serious question, btw. I've not seen that setup before.

Thanks,

Ryan

Thanks Mitch & Ryan for your kind words on the set.

As to the spur situation, that has been discussed previously in here in the past when I posted some photos of the set. No one has been able to come up with an explanation.

Some thought it may have been a lefty set. But, if you flip the bass drum around, the tom rail is way out there.

Others mentioned that maybe it used hoop spurs originally, and had the shell mounted spurs added at some point, and were improperly installed. But they do appear original, and are period correct.

Another had seen photos of Gene Krupa playing a set with the spurs in the same position.

Maybe it was just a bad day at 1728 N. Damen Ave.

It was also pointed out that the spurs are really to prevent the BD from rolling, and would be effective in either position.

So it was not a matter of choice, it's the only way I can play it. Been playing it that way since 1965, works fine!...lol

Batterhead-- I think you may actually have a lefty New Yorker bass drum. I somehow don't think Ludwig would've made a mistake like that and let it out of the factory.. It would make sense, as i'm sure there may have been a demand for lefty kits for lefty players to have..

Guitar companies made lefty guitars as well, and i have seen original lefty Ludwig kits in the past, although they're few and far between, but they do exist... Whatever the case, you're kit is gorgeous, and i'm sure sounds incredible.. I'm getting my kit off my buddy in a couple of wks and can't wait.. I will most certainly post pics when i get the chance..

Bass drum is a '52 WFL New Yorker,(nickel plated lugs) and the tom and floor are 60's Ludwig super classic.. 22x12-13x9-16x16..
