Hy guys
just finished this Tacton Drumset. Got it cheap over ebay. On the first pic you see the way i got it. The former owner made some awful restoration with a cheap self glueing wrap. Did not look very nice.
So i decided to rewrap this kit!

Are these wood shells, or they are a "DDR school version" made from bakelized cellulose?

they are both!
The Toms are beech with re-rings and the bassdrum is bakelized cellulose!
That set has as an awesome sound, i was really surprised by playin it. Also i think the Hardware on the shells is exellent!

Is bakelized cellulose the same as phenolic resin?
Is it similar to Bakelite, the first plastic invented in Germany?
What do you call the color of that wrap?

Yes it´s like phenolic resin:-)as far as i know, strange - but sounds good:-)
The color of the wrap is called purple sparkle!

Hi Scott,
You're partly right --- the shells made from rolled paper impregnated by bakelite resin.
In his job Chris painted the internal shell surface --- it's the good way to stop the terrible smell which begun after one year of life such shells and continued during all the following time...
Bakelite (phenolic resin) inventor was an american Leo Baekeland (ethnic belgian)...

Thank you sir. I knew there was a European connection there somehow.
Some of the Pearl President line were phenolic resin shells.
Did not know they smelled bad even after curing.

Father-42 knows the stuff;-) yes it has a terrible smell. But it stopped after the painting!
I am fascinated that this stuff sounds so good:-)
