Over the weekend i picked up this what i think is a 1968 pearl jet outfit in tiger eye wrap , this is a cool kit for sure with the thin shells and re-rings. This kit is in amazing condition , there realy is not much to do to this kit but to clean it up change a few non original parts and re-skin top to bottom , if any vintage pearl fans can add info on my weekend find i would love to hear from you.

Kelly here..
I had a kit like this a few yrs back..(late 60s Bolero)
with the right skins & slightly under tuning,..
The kit was amazin..
Evan EQ4 on bass (no pillow/blanket)..
Vintage A's all around & a Hazy under the snare..
*(keep the snare from chokn)....slightly under tune the skins & wires,...also use Moon gel to dampen)..
My only small concern was that the flr tom never could project...
until a buddy of mine (Paul from Udrum) gave me a set of those Kabooms (Pearl) flr tom RUBBER feet.!(best $10 I spent on the kit)!
Excel kit & Very light / easy to transport..!
Enjoy these/...

I have a Whitehall just like this - but is a project still waiting for me. I have a different Pearl made 3ply/ring kit though - and so long as your shells/edges are true....they will sound amazing. Tune to the shell - which may be lower than you would expect. Tune both heads to that fundamental timber-pitch note and go for max resonance - then muffle as desired (I use studio rings) - pure joy!
Very cool that yours are badged PEARL - it just seems to make them more genuine, though we all know that the stencils are identical to the Pearl-badged.
BTW - 1968 would be the latest they could be as I understand that both Pearl and Star transitioned in 1967-8 from the thin to the thick shells.

very cool , i also sometimes use the Aquarian studio rings for that deeper closed sound.

....then I must ask - many would see it as overkill - but I am recently intrigued and possibly convinced, that using COATED head with the rings is NOT too much muffling/control. Overkill and redundant used to be my paradigm and I always ran Clear Ambassadors with rings. Then I decided to keep the heads that were on there when I bought my kit (coated) - and still tried the rings - and so long as you have good resonance - they still have plenty of resonance with the rings and they sound great - especially when mic-ed. Then that brings me to the next question/topic of discussion - studio rings when mic-ed....sometimes the buzz from the ring laying on the head.........

First of all i do not like the remo and evans rings too thick or just to light as for the Aquarian rings they work just fine , as a drum tech that works on a lot of pro live out door indoor shows and many studio gigs i found studio rigns can be a good go to tool for a lot of different reasons , like a last second kit with no time to fine tune or a room or halls that are not drum friendly , i also agree with you that any make may or can cause a slight buzz when used on coated heads . as for me i never leave home with out my Aqaurian Studio rings.
