Grommet Help!

I bought a grommet and made a grommet tool using the pictures and advice from people on this site on how to make a grommet tool. Great info on how to make the tool, little info on how to use it.

The grommet tool looks exactly like the one pictured in the "grommet tool" thread.

What I ended up with was a crushed grommet on the top where the badge is. I had to remove the badge and unfortunately scratched the badge some. It's usable and expensive so I'm going to use it again but is there a trick to this?

I just ordered 3 more grommets (I guess I have little confidence in my ability to do this) and I want to get it right.

Can anyone shed some light to installing grommets? Is there a trick? Is there a proper procedure? Should I bag the grommet tool and get out the hammer?

Any advice or instruction will be greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure but I think you use the tool from inside the shell. You should not be banging on anything on the badge side, I would think. I am sure someone will know for sure and weigh in shortly.

I just went on YouTube and there's a demo on a Slingerland (which is what I have) and the guy cut small slits in the grommet then used the same tool I have.

It worked well, but from the inside it didn't look factory. Any thoughts on slits? This will be a players kit so I'm not too concerned about the look, but if there's a way to do it without cutting slits, I'd like to know.

Thanks Poppy, that's basically what I did but I didn't have an impact wrench. I just used a ratchet wrench.

Is the speed of the impact wrench the trick?

Naw. I just use a ratchet too.

The key is to make sure you have the right size grommet.

Did you have the right thickness bolt? I used one a size thinner (home cheapo has a crap selection) and my grommet looks like the Dali painting of the melted clocks on the outside. I was concerned with the inside as the shell had some tear where the old one was removed. I figured the outside was fine as the inside rolled up perfectly. But the outside....sheesh!!!! I learned the hard way on this one. Sorry for the dark pics it's like the batcave in the basement here.
