Slingerland Bass Drum?

Loading...

Hey Everyone, I'm new to this forum.... I thought maybe someone here can help me identify a drum I have.

I picked up this drum at a yard sale years ago, and I thought maybe i could do something with it. Someone had the bright idea of turning it into a christmas decoration.... removed the original finish.. painted the hoops and glued some kind of christmas wrapping paper around the shell.

So.. it's in bad shape, but I can't really identify it. I am pretty sure it's a Slingerland. The lugs are Stremlined lugs, indicative of Slingerland.... but I am not too sure. The washers on the inside of the shell, have both Ludwig and slingerland stamps. Most of them are Slingerland.

So, the shell construction seems kinda odd. Maybe this can be a clue? Also, there are no badges :(

Take a look at these pics. Can anyone identify it? Is it worth "saving"?

http://picasaweb.google.com/brwells/OldDrum#

Update: there are some wooden "hoops" nailed to the out side of the shell. You can see in the pics, there are white "hoops" underneath the "real" red wood hoops. I am pretty darn sure those aren't original and were put in place to keep the real hoops tight when placed into position.

Also, I started taking off the wall paper, and there are two layers.. and it looks like it was once painted blue perhaps? i don't suppose the old glue used for the original laminate was blue?

Hi. the "white hoops" you speak of aren't hoops, they are the drums interior reinforcing rings, which help the thin shell hold its shape. The edges on 'em, those are baffling me a bit.

What size is this drum ? Diameter ? It sorta looks like a marching snare, actually.

I would say it's a Slingerland...the lugs re old streamlined Radio Kings, which puts this drum pre-50's.

It sounds like it has had to endure a lot of bad ideas....there are certainly methods of getting off the contact paper and whatever the blue beneath it is (it MAY be the original wrap (?) )...but the Q is, is it all worth the time and effort ?

If you wanna try your hand at a project, sure....it may be worth it, why not ? But the ultimate goal would be bringing it back to decency so you could say you saved it, and it can now once again be used as a musical instrument. If your intent is to renovate and turn around for a decent profit...oof...I would say forget it...

Whatever it is, it looks heavy freaking duty, that's for sure.

Agree, looks like a marcher. I can't help with the lugs.

Thanks for the replies everyone!

I don't want to refurbish it for a profit, just as a side project, maybe end up with a quirky drum for recording? But if I can keep it original as much as possible, that would be best.

I forgot to include the size. It's 22 x 16.

I gently scraped off the paper last night. Under the paper there looks like 3 layers of paint. A thin coat of white, then a blue, then white again. The original covering is long gone.

What is confusing me are hoops on the outside of the drum. They are just nailed in. I am pretty sure they aren't original. Also, there are nuts and bolts on both of the reinforceing hoops. Which is odd. Those can't be original either. ... Along with the piece of wood that is bolted along the seem of the drum on the inside.

One more thing...

There are no holes for spurs or legs. I think older bass drums had their spurs mounted on the rim of the drum..... Yes? There two holes that looks like a spot that once had a tom mount attatched?

Again thanks for all the help !

Wow. THAT is a pretty drum.

Ok... so, the bolts are not original, and neither is the piece of wood bolted in the center.

So, i think I'll KINDA restore it. i say "kinda" only because my shell seems to not be in the best shape.

I don't want to restore it to sell it, but.. just to make it nicer, and somewhat playable. Polish up the chrome, New finish, replace broken hardware etc.

Can anyone here recommend some tips on refinishing this? Where is a good place to buy a wrap that is close to the original? Any recommendations on stripping the red paint off the rims?

Should I sand off the paint on the rims and the shell? Or should I strip?

And those two, "hoops" on the outside, i'll just gently pull them off.

Thanks for all the replies!

Thanks....

Paint = Strip (Jasco Premium @ Lowes or HD) then sand.

Hardware should be nickel. Old Nickel will only go so far with polishing. Just hand polish.

Precisiondrum.com for the wrap.

Wood glue and clamps will help a ton with getting the shell back in good shape. Dowel plug extra holes.

Most inportant thing...TAKE YOUR TIME!!!!

PS: Mine looked like holy crap when I started working on it.

Do you think I should take out the bolts? I am a little apprehensive. What are the chances that the drum is being held together by those?

Also, can you point me in a direction that would show what wraps and finishes were available at the time this drum was made? I would like to get something that was close to what might have been original. The wrap you have on yours is BEAUTIFUL!

Well there are a couple of things to think about.

1. The bolt could be holding it together which would be bad to have it pop open...not totally bad, just another step to put it back together with glue.

2. The drum may not have been wrapped to start with but painted, and if that's the case you don't want to add a wrap because the heads wont fit.

Soooo....if it had not been wrapped to start with, painting the exterior might be a nice option if you have to leave the bolts.
