MIJ toms lacking projection? NOT

Loading...

So if "projection" and volume are the same thing...........

I was just reading this thread about Mahogany snares - and several testified that the bigger factor in the volume of the drum was the edges (NOT the soft mahogany wood)............http://www.vintagedrumforum.com/showthread.php?p=317458#post317458

so...........doesn't this trump the common belief that the mahogany shells are the culprit making these lack volume? ....and perhaps it's the EGDES more so than the specie of wood.

BTW - I am NOT advocating the re-cutting of MIJ toms. Instead, if you are in a live situation that has no micing and you need to cut through a bunch of other instruments - don't use your vintage MIJ then. But really, if you have the benefit of mics, use these vintage MIJs and just let the sound system do your heavy lifting. Deliver the raw goods though - some nice vintage tone.

For the record, I have NEVER applied anything to the interiors of any of my vintage MIJs. Meanwhile, I have NEVER had anybody complain that my toms were not loud enough. Am I that much of a loud beast? (I use 5As)

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

Im a huge user of MIJ's and have never had any issues with projection. In my opinion it mostly comes down to tuning and whether theres dampening being used. Interesting point about the edges though

I always think the projection and resonance ideas are funny- So many times we see kits and heads purchased for resonance and projection and then taped and muffled up. I generally don't think Pearl fiberglass shells qualify as MIJ- From 1975 onward I think of it all as The Modern Pearl Drum Co. - but MIJ are from that golden age of the early 60s (late 50s) to the early 70s. One issue I have is MIJ single lug (Club Date style) bass drums and floor toms- these drums lack the tuning stability of Ludwig Club Dates. On the rack tom and snares it doesn't seem to be an issue. I prefer MIJ kits with lugs on top and bottom for toms and bass drum with short tuning screws. I don't think volume is a big issue- MIJ drums can be very loud.

don't qualify? golden what? a lot of so called mij drum get **** canned because they are ' only luan'' when an engineered shell comes along with all its perceived merit as a shell ie f/glass it must have some credit, every body i know gets off on ludwig vistalites, as you know is basicly plastic, no one i know makes reference to these holy grail drums as not mia.
