Ludwig restoration & one question

Loading...

Hello Everyone!

I've been looking for a long time this excellent forum, but this is my first post and I would like to thank You for the many useful information.

I'm finally at the end of the restoration of a vintage Ludwig orphans.

Bass Drum is 22 '' 6-ply and toms are 14'' and 18'', 3-ply with re-rings, mahagony outer ply. Bass drum was re wraped with ugly mythological wallpaper over blue paint over the original white cortex finish. Toms had the same ugly wallpaper over maple cortex Ludwig wrap. All drums have had a clean interior.

Because of the extra holes, I painted the interior in white. Granitone inside finish is more period corectly, but less nice in my opinion.

I refinish these 3 drum in silver sparkle using a similar method as a guy from Pearl forum.

http://www.pearldrummersforum.com/showthread.php?196050-Refinishing-drums-in-silver-sparkle

It only remains for me to mount badge grommets, so I bought a new ones, but they look too long. So please help me with information, what is the right length of badge grommets for 3 ply and 6 ply shell?

See picture.

Nice work!! There are grommets for 3 ply shells available on ebay. Just search "Ludwig grommet". here's one example: www.ebay.com/itm/Ludwig-Drum-Badge-Installation-Tool-4-FREE-GROMMETS-ROADCASE-STICKER-/400665662388?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5d4988d3b4

I'm not from USA, so shipping could be a problem.

Plus I already have grommets and could be cut to the right size, just need measures (length).

I don't know...maybe you should have kept the viking graphics. "Rare Viking finish".

I think I found the answer, 9/16'' for 6 ply, 3/8'' for 3 ply.

Soon I will put pictures of finished drums, now only 14'' tom.

It looks from the pics like you got the finish as smooth as the guy on the Pearl forum. An outstanding achievement IMO! Looks great!

Put grommet in badge, put on drum, mark where you wanna cut. Allow for crimp, same as front. Measure twice cut once.

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!
