Johnny Carson had more talent in his right pinkie...
I'm another fan of Duco although I know lots of people who hate them, I imagine a lot of the re-covered vintage kits we see may have started out life as duco finished. Most of the duco kits I see seem to be earlier sets from the 30s to the 50s, 60s less often. It's a good question though, when so many snares turn up in duco finish where have all the kits gone ? I wonder the same about early Zildjian swish cymbals, I never seem to see any earlier than the 1970s
Most of the Duco snare drums are 6-lug student models.Sold in a kit with a stand and a case, they were around $10 cheaper than a wrapped drum. Many of these purchases were experimental, in order to see if 'little Johnny' would stick with his new hobby, and the folks wanted to invest as little as possible. This is why there seems to be so many Duco snares and so few kits.
Here is a painted set that I restored a year or 2 ago. It has since been sold, but it is a beauty and sounds great. The 20" Rogers bass sounds huge, as usual. The last 2 pics were taken by the person who bought them from me.
These are some great-looking drum sets. How about putting them in the Gallery?
I had never seen a Rogers Duco before.
C&C Drums has had a special place in my heart since they started offering lauan as a shell material option.
I'm going to be playing my early-80's lauan CB700/Maxwin kit this weekend.
Yes, I will PM about the painting techniques. I'm just scared to let rip with a gold spray can on a drum that already has 2 coats of lacquer with sanding between. Got a little work and materials invested.

Erik,
Here's a photo of what it looks like -during- the painting process. You can see my turntable set-up! If you're using a hand-cranked lazy susan, keep that sucker spinning as you paint. The fade will take care of itself. Follow the instructions I sent you.
