Estate Sale Find...

Loading...

Sorry, won't be able to post a pic until I get home (out-of-town until Sunday evening). BUT... it was my wife's (the "vick" in "billnvick," short for Vicky) birthday Thursday, and she enjoys garage sales and yard sales and such, so I did the "good husbandly" thing and took her to some... and we stopped at a couple of Estate Sales.

And lo and behold, for a VERY REASONABLE price I picked up a 60s Apollo metal snare drum! This thing needs to be cleaned up a little and is missing the batter head altogether, but all parts are original (as far as I can tell) and working! When I get it home, I'll clean it up, add a batter head... and it WILL be MINT. This one is of 8-lug design, and is clearly a Slingerland SD copy.

I would be interested in some thoughts on its value. Can't find any metal ones like it available or sold on eBay...

Thanks in advance,

Bill

Prices for this kind of thing are all over the map here in Canada. Anywhere from $20 to $100 and beyond.

Here's a Coronet kit on kjiji for nine hundred dollars! Cymbals and stands, sure, but...anyway is that your snare he has?

Here are the "before" pictures. This is what it was like when we found it:

Here are the "after" pictures. For the most part, just a good cleaning. There was one lug insert that was broken and had to be replaced; also had to replace one tension rod. Added a lightly use Evans G2 batter head. Otherwise, I'm convinced the rest is original.

Nice work and sweet drum! Now I just have to figure out why I thought "Apollo" meant "Coronet"...lol.

Hey, that's OK... who knows, they may have been made in the same plant anyway!

I honestly have never found an MIJ drum of this era in this good of condition to start with, so it really didn't take a lot of work. Sounds OK, too...

I plan on moving it along (like just about everything else I get my hands on!), but haven't landed on an asking price yet...

Geesh!Slingerland GK snare copy much?

My first thought was "it's a Krupalike!"

That's one of the things I like about that era of MIJ's, that they chose Slingerland to emulate rather than Ludwig or Gretsch.

I wonder if somewhere in Japan there is THE Slingerland kit that was used to design the copies.
