Ringo Starr & Yamaha Drums

Just an interesting tidbit for discussion:

I viewed Paul McCartney's "Give My Regards to Broad Street" movie last evening. Remember that disaster from 1984? It was a major movie release. I went to see it on the 2nd day and the theaters were empty. Not sure why. But the reviews were bad and the movie plot was dumb. The music sequences were cool though. Some dated.

Anyway, Ringo was featured in the film very much and proudly played Yamaha drum, which I thought was interesting. Not sure why or if he was endorsed by them at the time? I thought his endorsement of Ludwig has been nonstop since the early 1960s. I cannot even find a photo of Ringo from the movie playing the Yamaha kit on the web.

Any comments?

I'm not sure, but maybe a back line or rental kit, provided by the production company?Maybe he just didn't want to drag his drums to the movie set.

Or maybe,he knew all of us drum collector,Ringo fans would be talking about this very subject almost thirty tears later:D

I thought he was. He still using them today.

I don't why but I thought it was a premier kit he used in the movie. Shows you how much I paid attention.

There was a short time in the eighties when Ludwig was having a lot of problems with their drums. They went out of round, and the wraps would come off. They even began installing rivets to hold the wraps in place. Ringo was not happy with the drums he was getting from Ludwig and played Yamaha for a few years.

Ringo never had an endorsement contract with Ludwig. He had a contract with Pro Mark and then Zildjian for sticks. Ludiwg was either too stupid or too cheap to sign him to some sort of deal.

Bill Ludwig famously shied away from providing some earlier drummers with equipment because he was afraid that they would demand compensation for playing his drums. He got the biggest break in business history on February 9, 1964. In return, he presented Ringo with a gold-plated snare drum that he never used, but I don't believe that Ringo ever got anything other than, possibly, free drums from Ludwig. You'll notice that they came out with the Fab Four set but never a Ringo set. That was to avoid paying Ringo for the use of his name and image.

Amazing! I saw the silly movie years ago but, I too, never paid attention. I just wanted the bad flick to end! Yamaha!? Jeez! Who'd a thunk it? You guys are remarkable for digging up this stuff! Thanks for sharing!

... and it looks like he's beating them with parade sticks! Big heavy sticks and bead. Interesting. Does anybody know what size sticks Ringo played originally?

John

Too many great drums to list here!

Ringo and Steve Gadd play Yamaha in the "Take it Away" Wings video. Maybe Steve turned him onto them? @ 2:23 you can see them well. Cool old thread here too!
