"The most recorded snare - makes it the best" Rant and Vent

I agree. It is an unbelievable drum. But, many many many drummers have quoted the "most recorded" and slapped on the "therefore best" ending. I just did a simple google search and came up with over 25 quotes from drummers that fall into this category. That's all I'm saying. I've read this tripe for years and just felt like venting. It's even in this forum on other threads. It just doesn't make sense. I've owned many of them through the years. They are very good drums. I'm not disputing that. It's the A equals B leap of faith that many drummers have made throughout the years that bugs the heck out of me. I've laid down many tracks with a Supra. That doesn't mean it's the best. And yet, many drummers make that statement. I'm only commenting (rather rabidly) that it is flawed logic. Again...I'm only venting. We all do it from time to time. This was my time. Thanks. I appreciate the space.

Seems you are the only one who thinks this lodgic is flawed, i have played Rogers drums for 45 years but i have always had a supra snare between my legs the reason? It simply sounds better, is easier to tune, stays in tune and most of all was well liked by our recording engineer what can i say i do indeed believe it is the most recorded snare drum ever, weather it is the best is subjective , but i knew kieth moon and i saw and played his "pictures of Lily" primere kit it had a Supra..many many small garage type bands from the late 60's all played ludwig, in fact i would bet ludwig was about 3 or 4 to 1 against

Rogers,Gretch, and sligerland ,as far as kits played and i have seen hundreds of bands.. so i believe their claim.

No one drum is the best....its all subjective....if its the sound in your head and the drum has it then that is the best drum for you and your application.....but I would say there is no best drum ever......I have my favorite, just because ts mine doesn't mean its the best or even anyone elses choice....

Thanks guys. I sincerely appreciate the healthy space and time to vent. This forum is wonderful for this. I've got it out of my system for now and can move on. Sometimes we just need to shout and shout again to work through things. I love the back and forth, give and take here. LD is one of my faves to spar with. You have forgotten more about Ludwig drums than I have ever learned. Great stuff. I feel so refreshed and clear. I realize that some of you don't understand why I did this. That's ok. I needed to get this off my chest and the wife doesn't understand the complexities. Some of you have some real insight. That made for some fascinating reading. Some of you missed the point of this thread entirely...but that's ok. Read the words carefully and you will see that I'm not "fer" or "agin" the drum. I'm just bone weary of the doggone drummers taking the statement "most recorded snare" and finishing it with "therefore the best" (as some of you implied right here). That's all this was about. I'm not refuting the "most recorded snare" claim. That's a given (by most stats). It's the last inference that ain't right. So, whether you "got it" or didn't, I would like to thank you for jumping in. It was fun and a bit healthy. Thanks again.

OOPS - my mistake. It was a SUPERsensitive that Joe played. Not the Jazzfest. Sorry 'bout that. My fingers got ahead of me. Anyway, point was that he didn't play the Supra-phonic. That's all I was trying to say in that sentence.

By the by - I dropped my one and only son off today at the MEPS. He's flying off to boot camp at this very moment. Air Force Away! House seems quiet.

Hi,

I always thought the "most recorded" was a unsupportable too, but I would not doubt that the supra had more million sellers than anything.

BTW, since the Motown info is so varied, I have repeatedly read that the Motown kit was a mongrel made up of various bits of Ludwig, Gretsch, and Slingerland. But, like the stats for the most recorded, unverifiable now.

Actually........he played all three...the Supersensitive, the Super Ludwig and the Supraphonic.....

My late 70's supra beats the hell out of my Black Beauty of the same era.

Of course best is a subjective term, But I actually do not really see the flaw in the logic of the "best" statement.

If decades of professional drummers and professional engineers decided that this was the snare best suited for what they wanted so much so that it became the most recorded snare ever; it seems that it is at least the drum that can be most associated with such a claim. It's not an accident that it has been recorded so much.

I do not see the numbers as "artificially inflated". I am not sure you can dismiss the choice and discretion of the most highly sought after studio drummers simply because they played on so many songs. What if you dismissed the individual player in your point total game and assigned a point per song recorded instead?

But what do I know about snares? I am excited to get my 60's Stewart I just snagged. :D
