Premier BDP refurb project w/ questions

Loading...

I got the floor tom today to go with the other Premiers I got last month. Now I am waiting on the new wrap to arrive so I can start this project. I have some questions, though.

For starters, what is the best way to remove rusty screws without breaking them or applying a chemical that will stain the shells? I already broke a couple screws on the mounted tom, and I don't want to make another trip to the machine shop.

Second, does anyone have a dampener for this floor tom? I am willing to pay, but trade would be great also!

Third, I have looked through the Premier info on this site, and am unable to come up with a year that they made 18X16 dia. floor toms. All I found were 14X14, 16X16, and 16X20. Does anyone know when this floor tom might have been made?

Any information is appreciated! I will post updates as they occur. Here's a "Before" pic to get things rolling.

I tracked down the 18X16 size listed in 1975 as an option on a pd6500, which wouldn't match this drum's wood, as far as I know. I have been told that Premier listed the 18X16 as 20X16 previously. Can anyone verify that?

Are you referring to the thin chrome plated Philips head screws that hold the lugs against the shell?

Those things always scare the heck out of me. CryBaby They appear to be made of really soft metal and the Philips head is odd when compared to an American Philips head screw. It's really easy to mar up or completely snap the head off.

Maybe some Premier experts will chime in with some tricks.

Yes, Tim. Them's the ones! Broke two of 'em. Also stripped one for the tom mount. Got an additional bd coming that I bought for parts. Hope some of the screws on it are good. Has some water staining in the bottom, so...:o

I had trouble removing the screws from my '72 set as the philips heads would chew out very easily and they were wound up very tight. I got myself a good electric impact driver and it worked really well. I would be inclined to use a little WD40 or similar to loosen them a bit.

I'm not sure about that depth floor tom but it looks a good match for the kit and my guess would be very early 60s. I had a similar kit with a non matching FT but apparently this is the way it came from the shop when new. The FT would have been an add-on and WMP was all they had in stock. Great drums.

Those are gorgeous, Andrew. Hope mine turn out half as nice! Thought of something else, too. When going through the catalogs, I noticed (or it seemed) that all the 20" bd that had tom arm mounts also had a cymbal mount. Mine doesn't. It DOES have two holes, cleanly drilled (like they were done at the factory), on opposite sides of the batter-side hoop almost parallel to each other. Any idea what they would have been for?

oh, i see. Not sure what that would have been for but maybe a hoop mounted accessory like a cowbell or wood block possibly?

Re-wrapped the tom with wrap salvaged from the floor tom. Still waiting for the new wrap for the floor tom to come in.
