A Vintage MIJ in the making Last viewed: 24 minutes ago

Just paid my deposit on a 'vintage MIJ in the making'. Hope to see it by November. I'm getting the colour and sizes in the first photo (except the bass drum - shallowest I could buy was 22 x 16) with the tom mount from the second picture. The toms will be Japanese Birch with a Maple kick drum. I have looked at every major manufacturer's offerings for over a year. Lots of nice drums. These are possibly the best manufactured out of all of them. To top it off, the factory manager replies to my emails within 30 minutes. I am hoping this will make a great vintage kit for someone one day, long after me.

Thanks Mike. Had to consider the different grains (maple/birch) so went with a wrap. Sakae glitters have quite large pieces compared to others. Should be a good stage colour too.

Just checked out the Sakae website. Incredibly beautiful well-made drums, with that "vintage" vibe. Which snare and tom hoops are you going with? Love the color, too!

Yes they are lovely. Unfortunately, I can't afford the $1000 extra for a snare just yet. Maybe later. I'm going with the standard triple flanged hoops too, for a more wide open sound. I'll see how it goes. Sakae are very open to helping me out later.

Great that you "bit the bullet" on something that you have been considering for quite a while.. Kit looks brilliant and it sounds like they are good company to deal with..

I understand that Sakae was producing for other major Japanese drum producers (Tama? Yamaha?) in the past.

Can it's price level be compared with TAMA's new 'Star drums'?

Short story on Sakae is that they made all of Yamaha's high end kits for 40 years. When Yamaha moved drum production to China, they asked Sakae to move with them. Sakae politely declined, deciding to risk everything in order to keep doing what they have been doing since 1925. The kit retails for about US$5000. They are virtually hand made drums.
