1920s L&L 5x15 10 LUG/SCROLL DeLUXE STANDARD MODEL

Loading...

Hi all,

Here's the latest into the collection...

1920s Ludwig & Ludwig 5x15 10 lug scroll DeLuxe Standard Model

As most of you know I like to collect "sets" of snares and this one completes another set. From what I am told 10 lug/scroll DeLuxes are somewhat transitional and rare in that they are in between the 8 lug scroll era models and the 10 lug 12 pt. floral era models. This drum is in great shape, all original and will need only a basic cleaning. I wanted to share the photos with you now as the restoration may be a week or three away because next week is the Chicago Show. The drum came from Ned at Vintage Drum Center. We had been working on this deal for close to a year, deals with Ned can take a while but we finally worked it out so all is good. The enclosed photos show the 4x15, 5x15, 6.5x15 8 lug scroll DeLuxes, the 4x15, 5x15, 6.5x15 10 lug floral DeLuxes and the 4x15, 6.5x15 10 lug scroll DeLuxes with the space ready to add in the 5x15. My goal as a collector is to find every size/model DeLuxe/Black Beauty that was made. I'm still in search of the following DeLuxes/Black Beauties and one early L&L: 1. 6.5x15 6 lug 1911-12 Standard, 2. 6.5x14 6 lug scroll, 3. 6.5x15 6 lug scroll, 4. 5x15 Super-Ludwig...you know where I am.

Mike; Do you do the restorations on these yourself or do you send them out? If you do them, do you do it for others too? Either way, is it expensive in relation to the value? Does it increase the value? Thanks. Tom.

Hi Tom,

I do a lot of the restoration myself...when the restoration calls for it I; strip the old lacquer off the shell and have my plater do the lacquer clear coat...I strip the old lacquer off of the hardware, polish the hardware and gold lacquer the hardware myself...I ony replate if it's a matter of matching up a few parts to the original hardware...I charge a fair price as all of it is done by hand...Does it decrease the value? The purists out there may say yes...my viewpoint is that I'm not going to leave rust on an old drum as rust never sleeps so when a drum is really worn and rusty I'll restore it, to me that is making the drum better than it was, not like original pristine condition but better than it came to me...the 5x15 10 lug scroll in the photo will only need a light cleaning...

Thanks Mike. My '28 deluxe is in about the same cond. as the 5x15. Maybe I should leave well enough alone.

That may be true...at least clean the grime off of the drum/hardware...
