Japanese Pearls- Need Info!

Loading...

Hey guys,

I stumbled upon this old set of Pearls for sale. I'm not in the market but was curious what you guys could tell me about them.

Any idea when these were made? Is this before the luan type export drums of the 80s, etc? What are they made of?

Any info you could provide would be appreciated! Maybe someone here will end up with them? I really like the wrap. I haven't seen anything like that on Pearl drums before.

It looks like a 1969 pearl kit although the spurs don't look genuine for the time. It looks like it's missing a few bits of shell hardware too.

These drums shells were typically luan too. By 69 they had fairly much perfected the thicker multi ply type shell rather than the earlier thiner shells with reinforcement rings.

But for $99 it would be a fun fixer-upper.

+1. Those look pretty nice for $100. They might even take less. If your close well worth a look. The bass spurs look like later Pearl parts. Good luck and keep us posted.

Glenn.

The last set I bought from them was my early 80s Tama Imperialstar 4 piece (no snare). They were marked at $140, but they dropped the price to $130 since they didn't have the matching tom mount. As I was loading up, he came running out with a box of hardware, including the correct mount! So, I bet they'd work with me. Who knows, they might even have something floating in the back somewhere.

I see it's missing a bass drum lug. How hard would it be to find one of those, along with the tension rod and claw?

Not too hard. Alot of them made and many MIJ parts guys around here. I could help you there but I am out of state right now and will not be home for months. Don't let a few missing parts stop you from snagging this up.

SKI on the batter and an Evans EQ(any number really) and that kick will sound very good. It's all about the edges and tuning to the shell with new heads - and those will sound great.

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

Glad to hear the hardware's not too hard to find. If I end up getting them, I'll definitely let you guys know what I'm looking for.

Drummerjohn, what does SKI stand for?
