Well,

Here they are after a good sanding...

There are some parts of the kit where the Minwax Mahogany stain seeped in pretty deep...I'm not too worried about it...besides...it's getting wrapped over anyway!

The shells look good...there's a bit of touch up left to sand down... but here soon I'll get the veneer for the interiors purchased and installed...for now, I have the hard wood dowels glued in place to fill the holes I don't need on the kit.

Also,

I'm thinking more and more about using tung oil on the inside of the drums once the veneer is sanded and prepped...any thoughts?

liquid paint stripper and a plastic scrub brush would clean out those interiors

otherwise, tung oil would just preserve the ugliness

what about tung oil on the maple though?

Everyone's quiet cuz they're bummed out that you're going ahead with the inner ply...just kidding [but it could be true :)] Have to admit, for myself, it seems super-not-worth-it.

That said, the tung oil would look killer on the maple I'm guessing...

You could gain some very good experience on how to do it. So why not? I would rather experiment on an MIJ kit I was not very attached too before I attemped to save a vintage drum that had serious issues.

Think of finding an old Slingly or WFL that was drilled out. You could plug holes, laminate a very thin piece of mahagony inside and then wrap the outside. Bam like new!

The "BAM like new!" was my thought as well...I had also thought about using an african mahogany ply instead of maple...but I'll admit now that it does cost a bit more moolah to get some...

Fair enough. I wasn't thinking that way because I don't generally do that kind of rehab, but you're right.

I've been happy with the sound of the MIJ kits and drums I've had so far, and usually just focus on making them look good.

So,

I've just completed the order for the interior veneer. All of the repairs to the shells have been made and things are progressing very nicely...

So, my next question: what would satin finish Polycrylic do to the inside of the shell sound wise? I really would like the satin finish look on the inside of the shells once I get the new veneer installed and sanded.

Oh...and I didn't order maple... :)

I did this with a Royal Star 1414 tom. It's a 'Martha Stewart-ish' look - the drum sounds great though.
