This will be my next major drum project. Orphaned pieces, stripped and refinished (tentatively) with a Pink Champagne Sparkle wrap. Included are 8X12 and 9x13 Ludwig toms (which have been previously stripped and (horribly) rewrapped in gloss black. (You can see that whomever did that damaged the shells when removing the original wrap, so I will have to touch them up with wood filler before rewrapping them again.) Then, there is the 1960 12x15 Ludwig Parade snare, which will be converted to a floor tom, after some minor repairs. Finally, there is a Pearl Export (Taiwan) 16x18 floor tom, which was previously converted to a kick drum. It functions very well in this capacity. I have preferred it for home recording projects. It will remain a kick drum in this set, though probably with replacement hardware that matches the other drums, and possibly with wood hoops (if I can find them). All three of the toms appear to be 3-ply Mahogany/Poplar/Mahogany, so the sound should be consistent. Any advice or tips are welcomed and appreciated.

QUESTION: Does the clear coat on the Pearl need to be completely removed, or can it be "scuff" sanded just enough to provide a rough surface for the adhesive to grip?

Not an expert, but I think some other guy in here has mentioned that before: it's best if you remove the coat completely.

I would definitely remove the old finish completely if you want the best lock with the adhesive for a wrap.

I will be sure to do that! I got the toms stripped and sanded today, and the parade snare-turning-floor tom unwrapped. The toms, which I aquired together with the same crappy finish on them, are apparently two different vintages, as the 12" doesn't have the Mahogany inner ply.

Thanks, Jeff! I haven't yet purchased the wrap, so there may be a short hiatus.

I do need to re-cut the bearing edges on the two smaller toms as they both had gouges from rubbing on bass drum tension rods (both sides, the former users weren't too particular which way they mounted their toms). I plan to cut them to 45 degrees, simply because I have a router bit to do that. What is the best method of ensuring the edges are flat before cutting bearing edges?

I actually considered just using a Dark Mahogany stain from Zar on them, but my wife says "NO!" The PCS wrap is her choice. Since she is being so patient about having so many drums in the house, I have to go with her selection. ;)

The 13" tom carried the large classic lugs, while the others carried the small. I wanted the lugs to all match, so I plugged the inner holes with Birch dowel plugs and drilled new holes for the smaller lugs.
