Ludwig poor lug drilling, etc ... SOS!

Top pic : left is MY tom from a full Hollywood kit; 2nd purchased as replacement (cloudy wrap) ... do the plys of the 2nd pic seem correct? BOTH tom badges are within 10,000 - clear interiors, keystone badges (very small window for these two facets to exist together).

Bottom pic (note bottom lug slanting to the left) : seller claims that many late 60's Ludwig drums COMMONLY came with flaws just like this off-kilter drilling that goes all the way around the reso side.

I am seriously PO'd as it seems that so many on ebay pull this kind of crap (this is only 1 of the buys I'm having to deal with). I paid the $220 for this 9x13 as even God would not have noticed the crooked lugs in the listing's pics.

So, if all you Ludwig fanatics out there know anything @ the above I would REALLY appreciate your opinion. By the way, the bottom hoop on this tom has bent tension rod loops because they're THAT off.

Thank you for your time - Chris

Most if not all are off - poorly drilled.

This could have been drilled while setting up the station`s machine tolerances and ruled acceptable to sell.

From OddBall

Does the hoop fit ?

Thanks Oddball - the hoop's fit but the holes are bent from the screwed lugs. I also am not sure the hoops are original, which the seller is claiming they are. I've numerous 60's kits here & they are different.

So the top hoop is the original from my Hollywood kit; the 2 below are those that came with the tom in question -

Okay, so seriously ... no one has had issues with crookedly drilled Ludwig lugs from the 60's?

Hate to keep asking, but I can't believe there's 1 response - chris

While quality control was not particularly high at the Ludwig plant, they apparently did use a jig at the plant that would have correctly lined up the holes vertically as evidenced by video from that time period. They apparently used a hand drill to run through the jig and did not seem to use any method to avoid blow-outs on the interior ply. If they used the jig, it would have been difficult to have come up with crooked lugs.

Honestly, it would not surprise me at all however.

I had a '71 floor tom that was pretty bad. There were three lugs that were off. I had to ream the holes out on one side to straighten things out.
